The first full week of November action kicked off Tuesday night with the undefeated North Winnipeg Satelites playing host to the Peguis Juniors. The Satelites grabbed an early lead, scoring less than 2 minutes in, however the Juniors answered back with one of their own late in the period to tie the game. The second period saw the Juniors find the net 3 times, outscoring the Satelites in the period 3-1, and holding a 4-2 lead heading to the 3rd. North Winnipeg cut the lead to 4-3 within the first five minutes, only to have Peguis score less than a minute later to open it back up. Again the Satelites tried to draw near, cutting the Juniors lead to 5-4, but Peguis scored an insurance marker with 4 minutes to go, and that was it. Peguis handed the Satelites their first loss of the season with a 6-4 win.
The Juniors captain Presley Kirkness led with a goal and 2 assists, while Tyler McKay, Devon Garson, Romano Paul & Darryl Flett each tallied with a goal and assist. Keifer Tacan made 27 saves on 31 shots to record the win.
Bryan MacKenzie led the Satelites with a goal and an assist, while Kyle Grand, Sean Murray & Grayson Schmidt all added single markers. Marc Hildebrand allowed 6 goals on 32 shots in the loss.
Wednesday’s action saw the Selkirk Fishermen visit the Fisher River Hawks. The first period was all Fishermen, as they scored 3 times in the period. The added 2 more goals in the 2ndperiod to extend their lead to 5-0. The Fish added a 6thgoal in the 3rd, before the Hawks answered back to break the shutout. Selkirk closed with a goal in the final seconds to record the 7-1 win.
Selkirk leading scorer Cale McBride led the game with 3 goals and an assist, while Tanner MacVicar added a goal and 2 assists. Jeremy Pachkowsky chipped in with a goal and an assist and Tyndall Fontaine & Jon Starodub both added 2 assists. Jordan Liske made 30 saves on 31 shots recording the victory.
Fisher River got their lone goal from Todd Maytawashing, with assists to Keenan Mason & Darryl Thaddeus. Dakota Johnson made 30 saves in the game.
With no games scheduled on Thursday, action resumed with two games on Friday night. The Peguis Juniors played their second straight road game visiting the as yet win-less Lundar Falcons. Lundar opened the scoring in the first, only to see Peguis come back with 2 of their own. The Juniors added a 3rdgoal with the lone second period tally, and held a 3-1 lead. The 3rdsaw 3 goals in the first five minutes, 2 by the Juniors and 1 by Lundar, with Peguis opening a 5-2 lead. The Juniors added two more over the final 10 minutes of the game and cruised to the 7-2 victory.
Joseph Sutherland led the Juniors with a hat trick (3 goals), while Presley Kirkness added 2 goals and an assist. Romano Paul had 3 helpers. Darryl Flett added 2 assists of his own. Jarrod Smith made 31 saves on 33 shots in the win for the Juniors.
Lundar got single markers from Skylar Desjarlais & Anthony Mikula. Randy Quick made 31 saves in the net for the Falcons.
Also on Friday night, the Fisher River Hawks journeyed to St. Malo to lockup with the Warriors. Fisher River opened the scoring early in the game, only to have St. Malo score 6 times over the remaining 17 minutes of the period. The second period saw the Warriors add two more goals, and hold an 8-1 lead. St. Malo added 4 more goals over the first four minutes of the 3rd, cruising at 12-1. Fisher River found the net again, only to trade goals within 42 seconds in the 3rd. Chalk this one up as a 13-3 Warriors victory in front of their home crowd.
The Warriors got 2 goals and 2 assists from each of Bryden Johnson & Jared Magne. Jared Hunter scored twice & added an assist, while Mike Boles added 3 assists in the game. Ben Olson chipped in with 2 goals and Brady Stoupe added 2 assists. Justin Collette, Brett Brakel and Brett Keith all added a goal and assist each. Tanner Friesen recorded the win, making 22 saves in the effort.
Fisher River got two goals from Tristin Starr, and a goal and an assist from Jared Thickfoot. While Ryan Bruyere suffered the loss, making 24 saves on 36 shots, Dakota Johnson made 14 more saves as both goalies split time in the game.
Saturday night had two 5-1 teams do battle in Selkirk as the North Winnipeg Satelites hooked up with the Selkirk Fishermen. The Satelites drew first blood in the game, scoring twice in the first period and holding a 2-0 advantage. The Fish scored early in the 2nd, on the powerplay, and then again a few minutes later to tie. Not to be outdone, the Satelites added a goal of their own, as did the Fishermen late in the second, and the 2ndperiod ended in 3-3 tie. Selkirk broke the tie as the game neared the midway point of the 3rd, only to see the Satelites tie it right back up a minute later with a powerplay marker. Nothing could be settled over the final 10 minutes of the 3rdperiod so the game headed to overtime. With only 1:00 remaining in the OT period, the Satelites found the back of the net and stole the extra point to record the win.
Kyle Collins led the Satelites with a goal and 2 assists, including the OT winner. Jason Campbell & Sean Murray each added a goal and an assist, while Vinny Carriere tallied two goals of his own. Marc Hildebrand made 28 saves to record the OT win.
Selkirk’s Tanner MacVicar scored twice & added an assist, while Karl Fey added a goal and an assist of his own. League leading scorer Cale McBride managed a single goal. Nolan Boitson, playing his first game of the season in goal for the Fish recorded 20 saves in the contest.
Sunday’s lone game on the schedule had the last two winless teams in the KJHL meeting for the first time. The Lundar Falcons visited Fisher River, with both teams looking to get into the win column. Lundar scored the lone goal of the first period, with a powerplay marker. The game remained 1-0 until midway through the 2nd, when Lundar scored 3 times in a 4 minutes span, and opened a 4-0 lead. The Hawks answered back with one of their own, and the second period ended 4-1 Falcons. The 3rdperiod was all Lundar, as they scored 4 times, and cruised to the 8-1 win.
Lundar’s Breyden Turner recorded a goal and 4 assists for 5 points in the game. Dylan Wittinger & Nico Lisi both added 2 goals and an assist. Braden Lussier chipped in with 2 goals in the game. Randy Quick was solid in goal for the Falcons, making 53 saves on 54 shots recording the win.
Fisher River’s lone goal in the game came off the stick of Todd Maytawashing, with assists to Tristan Slater & McCraie Sinclair. Dakota Johnson made 20 saves over the game in the goal for the Hawks.
KJHL action continues this upcoming week with a game on Remembrance Day (November 11), when the St. Malo Warriors visit the Peguis Juniors. Wednesday sees the North Winnipeg Satelites do battle with the Arborg Ice Dawgs. Friday night sees the Ice Dawgs lockup with the St. Malo Warriors in St. Malo. Saturday night has three games on the slate, with the Lundar Falcons paying a visit to Selkirk to matchup with the Fishermen, OCN Storm hitting the road and looking to keep their unbeaten streak alive, meeting up with the North Winnipeg Satelites & the Fisher River Hawks heading to Norway House for a weekend set with the North Stars. Sunday sees the second game of the Fisher River vs Norway House weekend series, while OCN drops into Peguis to battle the Peguis Juniors.
