The first week of December kicked off with two games on Tuesday night.  The Fisher River Hawks paid a visit to Mosienko Arena to meet up with the North Winnipeg Satelites.  The Satelites opened the scoring, with the lone goal of the first period.  Fisher River answered back to start the second with two of their own, including a shorthanded goal, and held a 2-1 lead at that point.  North Winnipeg came back with 3 goals before the 2nd ended, including a powerplay marker in the final minute, and held a 4-2 second period lead.  The 3rd period saw the Satelites score 4 times in the first eight minutes of the period to go up 8-2.  Fisher River answered back with a goal, but the Satelites added one more of their own.  When the dust settled on this one, it was a 9-3 North Winnipeg final.

Kyle Collins paced the Satelites with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Sean Murray was in on 4 goals with assists.  Mathew Carrey tallied 3 goals for the hat trick.  Jason Campbell, Bryan MacKenzie & Kyle Grand each added a goal and an assist.  Keaton Klassen made 20 saves in the Satelites’ goal for the win.

Darryl Thaddeus scored twice for the Hawks, while Arnie Mason added a single goal.  Dakota Johnson made 50 saves in the game for the Hawks.

 

With the Hawks on the road, the Peguis Juniors played host to the Lundar Falcons.  Peguis struck first to open the scoring.  Lundar answered with a goal of their own, only to have Peguis take the lead just before the end of the first.  In the second, the Juniors opened up a 2 goal lead early in the period.  Lundar fired one back to draw within one, but Peguis scored once more and took a 4-2 lead to the dressing room.  The third period saw Peguis add two more goals, both unanswered, and the Juniors cruised to a 6-2 victory on home ice.

Tyler McKay led the Juniors with a hat trick.  Romano Paul, Jesse Flett & Darryl Flett each added a goal and an assist to round out the scoring.  Theoren Spence & Presley Kirkness both chipped in with 2 assists.  Keifer Tacan was solid in goal, stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced to take the win.

Lundar got single goals from Troy Kaartinen & Landen Gray.  Randy Quick made 36 saves in the Falcons’ goal.

 

Thursday night action pitted the Peguis Juniors in St. Malo for a contest against the Warriors.  It was the Juniors who struck first, scoring the only goal of the first period.  Peguis ran into some penalty trouble late in the first, and that allowed St. Malo to tie the game early in the 2nd with a powerplay goal.  Peguis answered that back with 3 of their own, and held a 4-1 lead until just a few minutes remaining in the 2nd, when St. Malo scored twice, and sent the game to the dressing room with the Juniors leading 4-3.  Peguis increased their lead to 5-3 early in the 3rd, but St. Malo scored right back just 20 seconds later.  Peguis then scored a shorthanded goal, only to see St. Malo get back to a 1 goal deficit.  Peguis added 3 goals in a 2:50 span in the latter half of the 3rd to ice the game, ending up with a 9-5 road win.

Darryl Flett led the Juniors with a goal and 3 assists.  Jesse Flett scored twice and added an assist.  Waylon Neault chipped in with 2 goals of his own.  Devon Garson, Presley Beaulieu & Tyler McKay each recorded a goal and an assist, while Theoren Spence & Dennis Stevenson added 2 assists each.  Keifer Tacan made 29 saves in the Peguis goal for the victory.

The Warriors’ got 2 goals from Jordy Hill, while Jeff Froese & Jeff Williams each added a goal and an assist.  Jared Magne got on the scoresheet with 2 assists.  Tanner Friesen made 31 saves on 40 shots in goal.

 

Weekend action got started Friday night, with one game on the schedule, as the OCN Storm visited Fisher River.  The teams played a scoreless first period of action.  The second period saw the OCN Storm break the tie, and end up with a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.  The game remained with a 3-0 Storm advantage until the final 3 minutes of the 3rd, when OCN found the mark 3 more times and cruised to a 6-0 win.

Tanner Koroscil recorded a hat trick for the Storm, while Mitchell Tilley and Maxwell Shoo each scored once and added 2 assists.  Drake Lathlin recorded 2 assists in the game.  Luke Penner made 49 saves in the game to record the win and earn the shutout.

While no Hawks players found the scoresheet, Dakota Johnson made 31 saves in the game.

 

Saturday saw the St. Malo Warriors visit Steeltown for meet up with the Selkirk Fishermen.  This was a spirited game between two longtime rivals.  The Warriors grabbed the lead in the game, scoring on the only goal of the first on the powerplay.  The Fishermen came out in the second and added both a shorthanded and powerplay goal to their total, and held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.  The 3rd period saw the Fishermen score three more goals to increase their lead to 5-1.  The Warriors then answered back with three of their own, and cut the Fishermen lead to 5-4.  It was simply too little, too late howerver, as the Fishermen added a final powerplay marker with just over a minute to play to ice the game.

Cale McBride & Jeremy Pachkowsky each scored twice and added two assists to pace Selkirk.  Tanner MacVicar chipped in with a lone goal and 3 assists.  Jordan Liske made 28 saves on 32 shots to take the win.

The Warriors were led offensively by Jessi Freund with a goal and an assist and Kyle Fortin who recorded two assists.  Tanner Friesen made 30 saves in the St. Malo net.

 

The OCN Storm continued their road trip with a game against the Arborg Ice Dawgs.  Arborg opened the scoring in the game, only to have the Storm answere back with 2 goals of their own, to take a 2-1 first period lead.  The Storm scored the only goal of the 2nd period, adding to their total and carrying a 3-1 lead in the first.  The final frame saw the OCN score twice, 30 seconds apart and then add another goal, all before the period was 4 minutes old.  Arborg answered back with two goals of their own, but couldn’t muster any more of a comeback as OCN closed out their two game road trip with a 6-3 victory.

OCN got a hat trick from Drake Lathlin, who also added an assist.  Mitchell Tilley found the net twice and added an assist.  Maxwell Shoo chipped in with 2 assists in the game.  Luke Penner continued his strong play, making 34 saves on 37 shots to record his second straight road win.

The Ice Dawgs got 2 goals from Cory Kuldys, and a single goal from Trent Kroeker.  Travis Schalk made 24 saves in goal for Arborg.

 

Lundar travelled north for a weekend doubleheader against the Norway House North Stars.  It was the North Stars who grabbed the lead in this game, scoring twice in a 1:04 span.  Lundar battled back however and tied the game before the period ended.  The second period saw the North Stars again take the lead, but Lundar tied it back up shorthanded before the midway point.  Norway House scored two more times, with Lundar answering once before the second period was over.  Lundar tied the game again in the 3rd, but Norway House found the mark with 2:30 to play, and held on for a nailbiter of 6-5 win.

Braeden Boschman scored twice and added an assist to lead the North Stars.  Brendan Hart and Glen Paupanekis each scored once and added an assist in the game, with Hart scoring the gamewinner.  Gregory Paupanekis added 2 assists.  Sean Bradburn made 34 saves in goal for Norway House.

Lundar was led by Storm Swan, who tallied a goal and added 3 assists.  Thomas Lestrat added 2 goals of his own, while Troy Kaartinen & Aldyn Gray both recorded a goal and an assist.  Andrew Smith made 36 saves in the Falcon’s goal.

 

Sunday saw the second game of between Norway House and Lundar.  The first period remained scoreless until the final minute, when Norway House opened up a 1-0 lead.  They added to their lead in the 2nd, and the home-side held a 2-0 advantage.  With 7:03 remaining in the 2nd, the Falcons found their offense, and scored 3 times in the period, taking a 3-2 lead to the dressing room.  The 3rd period was all Lundar, as they scored 3 more times and went onto the 6-2 win.

The Falcons here led by Breydon Turner and Troy Kaartinen with a goal and an assist each.  Zach Smith, Blake Klippenstein, Dylan Wittinger & Storm Swan all scored single goals.  Randy Quick made 46 saves in the Falcons goal for the win.

Kenley Monias led the North Stars with a goal and an assist.  Austin Ross scored a lone goal.  Brendan McLeod made 34 saves in goal.

 

Peguis continued their busy week with a matinee against the Arborg Ice Dawgs.  The Ice Dawgs got on the board first in this contest with a powerplay goal.  Peguis answered back with a goal of their own, and the game remained tied for the first period.  Arborg opened the second period with 3 straight goals to take a 4-1 lead.  Peguis chipped away and got a shorthanded marker.  Arborg and Peguis then traded goals as the period drew to a close and saw Arborg take a 5-3 lead to the final frame.  The 3rd period saw Peguis perservere and find the mark twice to tie the game and send it to the overtime.  Just 1:24 into extra time, the Ice Dawgs scored to claim the extra point.

Cory Kuldys led the Ice Dawgs with 2 goals and 2 assists.  Trent Kroeker added 4 helpers in the game.  Ryan Pochailo chipped in with a goal and 2 assists, while Travis Kilbrei scored once, and added an assist.  Jon Narverud made 50 saves on 55 shots for the win.

Peguis’ was led by Tyler McKay, Romano Paul & Christian Cochrane (who scored the game tying goal) with a goal and an assist each.  Keifer Tacan made 51 saves in the game for the Juniors.

 

With only 2 more weeks to play before the Christmas break, the teams continue to play hard and jockey for position.  This week’s action starts off on Tuesday night as the North Winnipeg Satelites play host to the Selkirk Fishermen.  Wednesday night sees the Fisher River Hawks visit Arborg to lock up with the Ice Dawgs.  Friday night has two games scheduled, as the Peguis Juniors meet up with the Fisher River Hawks and the North Winnipeg Satelites hit the road for a game against the St. Malo Warriors.  Saturday is a busy evening with three games on the docket – the Norway House North Stars begin their road trip in Arborg for a game against the Ice Dawgs, while Lundar plays host to the North Winnipeg Satelites.  The final game of the night sees the Selkirk Fishermen in OCN for a weekend set with the Storm.  Sunday’s action continues as the Fishermen play game 2 vs the Storm and the Norway House North Stars stop into Peguis for a matinee against the Juniors.
