Week 10 Wrap Up

Week 10 Wrap Up

S.Heather

With only two weeks remaining in the schedule before the Christmas break, teams are working towards climbing the standings and positioning themselves for a playoff run.  Action kicked off on Tuesday evening as the North Winnipeg Satelites played host to long-time rival Selkirk Fishermen.

North Winnipeg opened the scoring with two goals in the first 6 minutes.  Selkirk answered back shortly after, and then added two more goals to hold a 3-2 first period lead.  The second period saw the Fishermen score twice in a 47 second span to open a 5-2 lead.  The Satelites got one back, but then the Fishermen scored twice in 26 seconds while shorthanded to open a commanding 7-3 lead after 40 minutes.  The third period saw the Fishermen add two more to their total.  They did surrender a late powerplay goal to the Satelites, but in the end, the Fishermen romped to a 9-4 win over the league leaders.

The Fishermen were led by Jeremy Pachkowsky with a goal and 2 assists.  Justin Rawluk added 2 goals, while Cale McBride, Dylan Painchaud-Niemi & Drayton Mendrun all tallied a goal and an assist.  Jordan Liske made 29 saves to grab the win for the Fishermen.

Sean Murray led the Satelites with two goals.  Kyle Collins & Derek Ramage added single goals.  Travis Dosch started the game, making 21 saves on 28 shots, only to be relieved by Keaton Klassen who made 14 saves on 16 shots.

League play continued Wednesday night as the Fisher River Hawks travelled down the highway for a game against the Arborg Ice Dawgs.  Arborg broke the scoreless tie just before the midway point of the first, then added two more goals before the period ended.  In the second, they opened with a powerplay goal, then an even strength marker to open up a commanding 5-0 lead.  Fisher River got on the board with their own goal, but Arborg tallied 3 more times and took an 8-1 lead to the dressing room.  The third period saw Arborg add two more goals to their total, and cruise to a 10-1 victory.

The Ice Dawgs were led by Talon Kelly, who scored once and added 4 assists.  Travis Kilbrei added 2 goals and 2 assists, while Colton Davies scored twice and added 1 assist.  Cory Kuldys & Cal Finnson chipped in with a goal and 2 assists each.  Trent Kroeker earned 3 assists.  Deric Gulay & Mac Playford each scored once and added an assist.  Travis Schalk made 19 saves to record the win.

Fisher River’s lone goal was scored by Brent Courchene.  Dakota Johnson made a remarkable 64 saves on 74 shots in the game.

The KJHL had no games scheduled for Thursday night, but 2 on the go Friday.  The Peguis Juniors were in Fisher River to take on the Hawks.  Unfortunately, due to injuries and a lack of AP’s, the Fisher River Hawks had to postpone this game.  That left only one game on the schedule for Friday, when the North Winnipeg Satelites paid a visit to St. Malo.  North Winnipeg opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal, but St. Malo stormed back with 3 goals of their own before the first was over.  The second period saw the Satelites score twice before the midway point, tying the game up.  St. Malo answered those goals back with 2 of their own, and held a 5-3 lead going into the 3rd period.  The Warriors scored just 20 seconds in to take a commanding 6-3 lead.  The Satelites added one more in the last 5 minutes, but it wasn’t enough.  The Warriors knocked off the league-leading Satelites 6-4 on home ice.

Jeff Froese led the Warriors with 2 goals, while Jeff Williams added a goal and an assist.  Brett Keith was in on 2 helpers.  Kyle Fortin, Tristan Eastman & Bryden Johnson each scored single goals.  Tanner Friesen made 30 saves on 34 shots to record the win.

Kevin Haines led all Satelites scorers with a goal and an assist.  Jason Campbell, Sean Murray & Kyle Grand scored once each.  Travis Dosch started the game, surrending 5 goals on 23 shots.  He was relieved by Keaton Klassen, who allowed 1 goal on 15 shots.

Saturday evening saw 3 games on the schedule.  The North Winnipeg Satelites made a stop in Lundar.  The first period saw the Satelites take a 2-0 lead.  They opened this up to 6-0 with 4 more goals in the second period.  The Falcons scored two of their own, only to have North Winnipeg add one another to their total.  The 3rd period was all North Winnipeg as they tallied 4 times to cruise to an 11-2 victory.

Kyle Collins scored 3 times and added 4 assists for 7 points.  Mathew Carrey added 4 goals of his own and 2 assists, while Sean Murray tallied 5 assists in the game.  Colin Yarchuk, Keilan Mott, Derek Ramage, & Mason Klawis all recorded 2 points.  Keaton Klassen made 25 saves in the game for the win.

Brandon Worthing & Breydon Turner each recorded single goals.  Andrew Smith made 40 saves in the game for the Falcons.

Across the Interlake, the Arborg Ice Dawgs were hosting the Norway House North Stars.  This game was all Arborg, all night long as they dominated the North Stars.  The Ice Dawgs scored twice in the first period and held a 2-0 lead.  They added 9 goals in the 2nd, and tallied 3 more times in the third to handily win this game 14-0.

Travis Kilbrei scored 4 goals and added an assist for 5 points to lead Arborg.  Clint Torfason added 3 goals of his own and an assist.  Mackenzie Playford & Talon Kelly each scored once and added 2 assists.   Ryan Pochailo, Aaron Kristjanson, Kyle Barkman, Conno Jonasson, Cory Kuldys, Colton Davies & Auzzie Loewen Palmer all came away with 2 points.  Jon Narverud turned aside 40 shots in the game for the Ice Dawgs to record the win and the shutout.

No Norway House players found the scoresheet, however Sean Bradburn and Brendan McLeod made 34 saves in the game on 48 shots.

The last game on Saturday evening saw the Selkirk Fishermen making their trip to OCN for two games against the Storm.  OCN opened the scoring in the first period with a powerplay marker, and held a 1-0 lead.  They added a second to their total just under 4 minutes into the 2nd.  The Fishermen answered back with one of their own, and the score was 2-1 going into the 3rd.  The Storm added an insurance marker to make the score 3-1 in the 3rd and held on for the win.

Tanner Koroscil led OCN with 2 goals, while Justince Genaille added a single goal.  Luke Penner made 21 saves on 22 shots for the OCN win.

Jeremy Pachkowsky scored the lone Fishermen goal.  Jordan Liske turned aside 42 shots in the game for Selkirk.

Sunday afternoon saw Selkirk lock-up with OCN again.  Selkirk jumped out to an early lead, scoring two times in the first 4 minutes.  OCN answered back with a goal of their own, but the Fish led 2-1 after 20 minutes.  The second period saw OCN find their offence, and score 4 times in the period to take a 5-2 lead.  The Storm added a third period goal, before the Fishermen scored two of the own.  OCN swept the weekend series with a 6-4 win in the game.

Drew Morin recorded 5 assists in the game to lead the Storm.  Mitchell Tilley scored once and added 2 assists, while Jared McGillvary scored twice.  Tanner Koroscil, Maxwell Shoo & Jeremy Constant each added single goals and an assist.  Luke Penner turned aside 38 of 42 shots for the win.

Jeremy Pachkowsky scored two more goals to add to his weekend total, while Michael Smiley scored once and added an assist.  Brandon Paradoski recorded 2 assists in the game.  Jordan Liske made 33 saves in the Fishermen net.

Sunday’s schedule also saw Norway House completing their road trip with a stop in Peguis.  This game was a flurry of goals, as the Juniors were quick out of the gate in this one, scoring 5 times in the first period, while Norway House scored one of their own.  Peguis scored 34 seconds in the second to open a 6-1 lead, but the North Stars struck back with two of their own to cut the lead in half.  Peguis tallied two more goals, only to have Norway House score two of their own back.  Peguis snuck one more goal in, with just under 2 minutes to go in the period and the Juniors took a 9-5 lead to the third period.  In the third, the North Stars opened the scoring, only to see Peguis score 19 seconds later.  From there, it was Norway House who picked things up, with the North Stars cutting the Juniors lead to 10-9 by scoring 3 goals.  Peguis added some insurance, only to have Norway House draw close again.  Neither team could manage a goal in the final two minutes and this wild one ended 11-10 Peguis.

Tyler McKay scored 4 times and added 3 assists, while Darryl Flett added 7 assists for Peguis.  Joseph Sutherland scored a hat trick himself and added 3 assists, while Jesse Flett also scored a hat trick.  Christian Cochrane added 3 assists, while Tyrell Armstrong added a goal and an assist.  Jarrod Smith made 41 saves on 51 shots for the Peguis win.

The North Stars were led by Austin Ross with 3 goals and an assist, while Glen Paupanekis added 2 goals and 2 assists.  Sam McKay, Braeden Boschman & Brandon Paupanekis each tallied 3 helpers in the game.  Jameson Scott scored twice as well.  Sean Bradburn & Brendan McLeod combined to make 47 saves on 58 shots, with Bradburn suffering the blemish on his record.

This is the final week of KJHL action prior to the Christmas break.  Tuesday night will see the rescheduled game between the Peguis Juniors and the Fisher River Hawks in Fisher River.  Wednesday night has the Selkirk Fishermen paying a visit to Fisher River and North Winnipeg Satelites locking up with Arborg.  Thursday see the Lundar Falcons pay a visit to Peguis.  Friday’s schedule has the St. Malo Warriors in Lundar, while Selkirk is on the road in Arborg.  The schedule for Saturday includes Norway House meeting the Satelites in Winnipeg while Peguis is in OCN for the weekend against the Storm.  Sunday has three games scheduled, with the Juniors facing OCN, Norway House in Selkirk to play the Fishermen and the St. Malo Warriors in Fisher River to play the Hawks.  Monday has one game scheduled, which is the rescheduled date from November 22, as the Norway House North Stars are in St. Malo to play the Warriors.
