This past weekend, two KJHL teams had the opportunity to play a visiting team from Northern Ontario, the Nipigon Elks. The Elks were heading to Winnipeg to take in a Winnipeg Jets game on Sunday evening, and were able to arrange two games, one Saturday evening and one Sunday afternoon, prior to the Jets game.
Saturday night saw the Elks in Fisher River, playing the Hawks.
Nipigon struck first with a goal just 40 seconds into the game. Fisher River answered that goal back. The Elks took the lead again, with the Hawks again answering, and leaving the score tied 2-2 after one period. The second period saw the Elks pour on the offence, with 3 unanswered goals, and held a 5-2 lead. Early in the 3rd, the Elks added two more goals and cruised to a 7-2 win.
Dylan Durancenu scored twice and added an assist to pace the Nipigon Elks. Max Verville added a goal and an assist in the game. Tyler Tbner.
Darryl Thaddeus and Todd Maytawashing each scored single goals for the Hawks. Jarrett Hogue played in goal for the Hawks.
Sunday afternoon pitted the Elks against the Peguis Juniors.
Peguis scored the opening goal of the first, however Nipigon answered that with a powerplay goal late in the period to tie the game at 1-1. The second period solved nothing and the game headed to the 3rd all tied up. In the final frame, the Juniors exploded for 3 goals, including a powerplay marker, and held on to win 4-1.
Joseph Sutherland led the Juniors with 2 goals and an assist. Brennan Cochrane scored once and added 2 assists, while Presley Kirkness added a goal and an assist in the game. Both Keifer Tacan & Jarrod Smith split time in goal in the game for the Juniors.
Nipigon’s lone goal was scored by Dan King. Eric Ouellette played in goal for the Elks.
