Semi-Finals Recap

The semi-final matchups were set after the first round of playoffs.  In one semi-final, the regular season champion Selkirk Fishermen were set to play the St. Malo Warriors, who were fresh off their series upset of Arborg.  The other semi-final saw the Peguis Juniors take on the OCN Storm, who had advanced the furthest in their short history.

Selkirk Fishermen vs St. Malo:

Game 1 – This was a close checking affair, with some good goaltending.  Selkirk outshot St. Malo 38-26, but could only manage 2 goals, scoring on the powerplay in the 2^nd period and an insurance marker late in the 3^rd.

Cale McBride led the Fish with 2 assists, while Karl Fey & Jeremy Pachkowsky both scored single goals.  Bretton Fewchuk made 26 saves to record the win and a shutout.

No Warriors hit the scoresheet, however Tanner Friesen made 36 saves on 38 for a .947 save %.

Game 2 – The Fishermen jumped out quickly, scoring in the first minute, and then again a few minutes later, but St. Malo kept coming and scored twice in 17 seconds to tie the game back up.  From that point, it was all Selkirk, who scored 6 more goals and cruised to an 8-2 win.

Jeremy Pachkowsky scored twice and added an assist & Scott Thomas chipped in with 3 assists.  Cory Balcaen also scored two goals.  Jordan Liske made 24 saves on 26 shots for the win.

Triston Eastman scored a goal and added an assist, and Bobby High recorded 2 assists for the Warriors.  Tanner Friesen & Jordan Taylor both played in the game, allowing 8 goals on 33 shots.

Game 3 – The series moved to St. Malo, where the Warriors were looking to capitalize on the home crowd support.  It was Selkirk who scored the opening goal of the game, and then continued to increase their lead, scoring two more in the 2^nd and a fourth goal in the 3^rd to win 4-0.

The Fishermen got two points each from Karl Fey & Cale McBride, while four different scorers each found the net.  Bretton Fewchuk earned his second shutout of the series, stopping 39 shots for the win.

Much like game 1, no Warriors hit the scoresheet.  Jordan Taylor started the game, turning aside 15 of the 18 shots he faced.  He was replaced in the 2^nd period by Tanner Friesen, who made 15 saves on 16 shots.

Game 4 – St. Malo was looking to avoid elimination and a sweep.  They opened the scoring in the game on the powerplay, only to have Selkirk score twice before the first was over.  The Fish then added 2 more goals in each of the 2^nd and 3^rd periods, to closeout the series with a 6-1 win.

Cory Balcaen dished out 3 assists in the game, & Drayton Mendrun scored twice.  Corbin Pasternak also added 2 assists.  Jordan Liske made 37 saves on 38 shots in the game.

St. Malo’s lone goal was scored by Riley Hunter.  Tanner Friesen made 25 saves on 30 shots, before being replaced by Jordan Taylor, who made 5 saves on 6 shots.

Selkirk Fishermen advance to the KJHL Championship with a 4-0 series win over St. Malo.

The second semi-final saw the Peguis Juniors battle the OCN Storm:

Game 1 – Peguis scored twice in the first, and added two more in the 2^nd to hold a 4-0 lead.  OCN broke the shutout bid nearing the midway point of the 3^rd, but Peguis added an empty net insurance marker and took a 5-1 win in game 1.

Darryl Flett led the Juniors with a goal and 2 assists, while Presley Kirkness, Tyler McKay & Tyrell Armstrong all scored a goal and added an assist.  Keifer Tacan made 30 saves on 31 shots.

Mitchell Tilley scored the lone OCN goal.  Luke Penner made 45 saves on 49 shots for the Storm.

Game 2 – OCN opened the scoring in game 2 but Peguis answered back to have tie the game after 20 minutes.  OCN scored again in the first minute of the 2^nd, however this time Peguis answered with 2 goals and held a 3-2 lead.  The 3^rd period saw the Juniors score 5 times, and cruise to an 8-2 win.

Theoren Spence led the Juniors with 2 goals and 3 assists, while Waylon Neault tallied 2 goals & 2 assists.  Dylan Stevenson, Tyler McKay & Joseph Sutherland all ended with 2 points.  Keifer Tacan made 28 saves on 30 shots for the win.

Maxwell Shoo scored both Storm goals.  Luke Penner made 41 saves on 49 shots in the game.

Game 3 – After playing the first two games in Peguis, the series shifted to OCN.  Neither team scored in the first, but it was the Juniors who found the back of the net three times in the 2^nd to hold a 3-0 lead.  The final frame saw no one score again, and the Juniors won the game, and held a 3-0 series lead.

Presley Kirkness scored a goal and added an assist, while Romano Paul dished out two assists.  Keifer Tacan was solid in goal, making 30 saves to record the shutout win.

No Storm players found the net, however Luke Penner turned aside 29 of the 32 shots he faced.

Game 4 – With OCN facing elimination both teams came out flying.  Both the Storm and Peguis scored twice in the first period, and 20 minutes solved nothing.  The 2^nd period saw each team score again, and the game headed to the 3^rd period all tied a 3 apiece.  The Juniors scored four times over the final 6 minutes of the game and went on to a 7-3 victory to close out the series.

Joseph Sutherland led the Juniors with 2 goals and 2 assists.  Waylon Neault, Darryl Flett & Tyler Woodhouse all scored 1 goal & chipped in with an assist.  Keifer Tacan stopped 28 shots on his way to the win.

Mitchell Tilley scored twice for the Storm, while Maxwell Shoo added a goal and an assist.  Tanner Koroscil recorded 2 assists.  Luke Penner made 34 saves on 41 shots.

Peguis Juniors advance to the KJHL Championship with a 4-0 series win over OCN.

Both the St. Malo Warriors and the OCN Storm should be congratulated on their seasons.  The KJHL final will begin in Selkirk, where the first two games will be played, before moving to Peguis for games 3 and 4.
