Week 16 Wrap-UP

Week 16 Wrap-UP

S.Heather

As January drew to a close, a lighter week of scheduled games was on tap.  Action got rolling Tuesday night at Mosienko Arena, as the Arborg Ice Dawgs and North Winnipeg Satelites took to the ice to battle.  Arborg started fast, scoring just 36 seconds into the game.  Just 24 seconds later, the Satelites scored to tie, erasing the quick start.  With 1 tick on the clock, the Satelites took the lead with a power play goal to go up 2-1.  Building on that momentum, North Winnipeg scored 1:05 into the 2nd period to take a 3-1 lead.  Just before the midway point, the Ice Dawgs got a power play goal back to cut the lead to 3-2.  North Winnipeg scored an insurance marker in the 3rd, the only goal of the period to come away with a hard fought 4-2 win.
Glen Paupanekis led all scorers with 2 assists.  Bryan MacKenzie, Derek Ramage, Jesse McIntosh & Sean Murray all scored single goals.  Marc Hildebrand turned aside 29 of 31 shots in the game to earn the win.
Arborg got single goals from both Clint Torfason & Colton Davies.  Jon Narverud made 27 saves on 31 shots in the Ice Dawgs goal.

Wednesday night saw the division leading Selkirk Fishermen head to Lundar to play the Falcons.  Selkirk broke a scoreless first period just before the midpoint, and then added two more goals, only 28 seconds apart to hold a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.  The second period saw the Fish score just 33 seconds in to go up 4-0.  The game remained that way until the final few minutes of the period when the teams traded goals, leaving the Fishermen with a 5-1 lead after 2 periods of play.  The 3rd period had Selkirk score first again.  Lundar answered back with a power play goal to the cut the lead to 6-2, and then added 2 more goals, but that was as close as they could get, falling to the Fishermen 6-4.
Jeremy Pachkowsky scored 4 times to lead the Fishermen.  Both Karl Fey & Talon Kelly chipped in with 2 assists a piece.  Kale Ilchena & Drayton Mendrun both recorded single goals.  Riley Bannerman made 37 saves on 41 shots to earn the win.
Aldyn Gray & Mason Medeiros each dished out 2 assists for the Falcons.  Terence Roulette, Brenden Carlson, Cody Paul & Trent Laycock each scored once.  Travis Rigden stopped 25 shots in goal.

Friday night had two games scheduled.  The Falcons were back in action, hosting the OCN Storm.  Lundar opened the scoring in the game, only to see OCN answer back a few minutes later to leave the game tied a 1-1 after 20 minutes.  The second period saw the Storm score twice, both shorthanded, while Lundar scored one of their own, to give OCN the lead 3-2 heading to the final frame.  In the 3rd, it was all OCN, as they cashed in 3 times to cruise to a 6-2 win.
The Storm were led by Lodie Ipeelie, who scored a hat trick & added an assist.  Bryson Constant was in on 3 goals, while both Camacho Lathlin & Drew Morin scored once and added an assist.  Luke Penner was strong in goal, allowing 2 goals on 28 shots in the game.
Lundar got single goals from Brandon Worthing & Jason Nikkel.  Travis Rigden stopped 33 of the 39 shots he faced in the game.

In the other game Friday night, the Cross Lake Islanders paid a visit to the St. Malo to play the Warriors.  St. Malo scored the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead.  They increased their lead in the second period, scoring 3 straight goals, including a power play marker to go up 4-0.  Cross Lake got on the board themselves, but before the clock ran out, the Warriors had scored again & held a commanding 5-1 lead.  In the 3rd, the Warriors added 2 more goals to go up 7-1.  Cross Lake scored two of their own, including a power play marker to reduce the lead to 7-3.  The Warriors closed this one out with one final goal, and went on to win 8-3.
St. Malo was led by Jared Magne, who scored 3 times and added an assist, while Dustin Wiebe and Riley Hunter both scored once and added 2 assists.  Bryden Johnson scored a goal and dished out an assist & Jessi Freund added 2 assists.  Noah Fournier stopped 34 of the 37 shots he faced to earn the win.

The schedule had 3 games on for Saturday.  OCN continued their road trip with a stop in Selkirk to play the Fishermen.  OCN took an early lead, scoring 1:06 in.  The Fishermen replied back just over a minute later to tie the game, but then OCN added two more goals to take hold of a 3-1 lead.  The Storm added to their advantage, scoring first in the second period, to go up 4-1.  With the Fishermen on the power play though, they scored to cut the lead in half, as the teams went to the dressing with OCN leading 4-2.   Just past the midway point of the 3rdperiod, the Fishermen scored to draw to within one, making the score 4-3.  With under 2 minutes to go in the game, Selkirk found the mark on a power play goal, which ended up being the equalizer, and sent the game to overtime.  Selkirk ended up on the power play in overtime, and put the game away to earn the extra point, making the score 5-4.
The Fishermen got 2 goals and an assist from Milan Horanski, along with a goal (including the game winner) and 2 assists from Jeremy Pachkowsky.  Coel Forsyth & Karl Fey both scored single goals.  Jordan Liske stopped 30 of 34 shots in the game to earn the win.
Camacho Lathlin scored 2 times and added an assist to lead the Storm.  Both Tyrel Buechert & Lodie Ipeelie scored single goals.  Luke Penner stopped 41 shots to earn OCN a single point.

In St. Malo, the Ice Dawgs were on tap to play the Warriors.  St. Malo took a 1-0 lead, scoring the only goal of the first period.  They increased their lead with both a shorthanded goal & power play goal in the 2nd, to hold a 3-0 advantage heading to the final stanza.  In the 3rd, the Ice Dawgs pressed hard, scoring twice on the power play to cut the Warrior lead to 3-2, but that was as close as they could get as St. Malo skated away with the victory.
Jared Magne paced the Warriors by scoring twice and adding an assist.  Riley Hunter chipped in with 2 assists & Bryden Johnson scored a single goal.  Jordan Taylor stopped 28 of the 30 shots he saw, earning the win.
Arborg’s Travis Kilbrei recorded a goal and an assist.  Kyle Barkman scored once.  Jon Narverud turned aside 39 of the 42 thrown his direction.

The final game of the weekend pitted the Cross Lake Islanders against the North Winnipeg Satelites.  The Satelites scored early and often, tacking on 4 goals before the midway point of the first period, including 2 on the power play.  Cross Lake got one back, a power play goal of their own, but that left the score 4-1 North Winnipeg after one.  The second period saw the Satelites add to their lead, scoring twice more, with one on the power play and holding a 6-1 lead.  Over the final 16 minutes of the 2nd period, the Islanders kept coming, and battled back with 3 goals of their own, cutting the lead down to 6-4.  North Winnipeg added another power play goal in the 3rd, grabbing a 7-4 lead.  Cross Lake answered with two of their own, including a power play goal to make the score 7-6.  The offensive outburst continued, as North Winnipeg added two more goals, just 43 seconds apart to go up 9-6 in the game.  The Islanders weren’t done yet though, as they tacked on 2 shorthanded goals to pull to within one at 9-8.  That was as close as they could get though, and North Winnipeg closed out the game to earn the win.
The Satelites got 2 goals and 3 assists from Parker Cassie & a goal and 4 assists from Scott Douglas.  Braden Sargent & Sean Murray both recorded a goal and 2 assists, while Bryan Mackenzie added 2 helpers.  Derick Vinsky started the game, stopping 31 of the 37 shots he saw.  Marc Hildebrand came in at the midway point of the 3rdperiod, and stopped 6 of 8 shots to earn the win.
Braeden Boschman scored 3 times and added an assist, while Jameson Scott scored a hat trick.  Rosaire McKay dished out 3 assists.  Dennis Scatch & Arnel Evans each recorded 2 points.  Kris Wood Ross & Brendan McLeod combined in the game to stop 39 of the 48 shots they faced.

With no games scheduled Sunday, that concluded the weeks’ worth of KJHL action.  There are only 2 weeks to go in the regular season & teams are battling hard for playoff position.  Very little has been decided standings-wise, so almost every game matters.  February action kicks off Tuesday night, with the Arborg Ice Dawgs visiting the Selkirk Fishermen & the St. Malo Warriors playing the North Winnipeg Satelites.  Wednesday night pits the Norway House North Stars in OCN to play the Storm.  Thursday evening has the Fisher River Hawks on the road in Peguis to play the Juniors, while the Lundar Falcons battle the Warriors in St. Malo.  Friday night has just one game – a matchup between the Selkirk Fishermen & the Lundar Falcons.  Saturday night sees the St. Malo Warriors play the Arborg Ice Dawgs, the Peguis Juniors head north to play Norway House & the Fisher River Hawks on the road to OCN to face the Storm.  Sunday has the Juniors conclude their road trip with a stop in Cross Lake, while the Hawks play the Storm again.
