The 2017 Keystone Cup held in Arborg April 13 – 16th was a huge success. Arborg will be rated very highly as one of the top communities on hosting the Junior B Westerns throughout Western Canada.
The Arborg Western Committee consisted of 20 board members with co-chairs Allan Sigurdson and Maureen Sigurgeirson. This committee consisted of a strong core of individuals who never looked back, and who knew that through hard work, dedication and countless hours we would be successful, and this and more was accomplished.
The approximately 80 volunteers of this prestigious event dropped what they were doing at home and spent four days in and around the arena to help this event run smoothly. The reffing was consistent and kept the games under control, this helped everything to run more smoothly.
Arborg had tremendous support from their sponsors, and this has led to the huge success of this event. The 45 plus businesses from Arborg and surrounding area cannot be thanked enough, becoming in that factor the greater part of contributing to hosting one of the largest hockey events put on in Arborg.
With our team the Arborg Ice Dawgs we went through the round robin with two wins and three losses. After losing to BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan we defeated Provincial Champs Peguis Juniors 7-2 and Ontario Nipigon Elks 9-4. We were placed in the bronze medal game against Regina Capitals. We did not come out strong from the start, and we were down 5-0 into the second period, and lost the game 6-2. With that there was no quitting in our club, and we worked hard to the end. With 70% of our team core coming from the small community areas of Arborg and Riverton that says a lot. They all played with heart and determination from day to day.
The Arborg Wesern Committee and Arborg Ice Dawgs has achieved their goal in being successful, and other provincial teams have left with happy memories. We have had positive feedback and comments set forth from all provinces and we are very proud to have hosted this event!
