This week’s KJHL action began Tuesday night in a South Division matchup between the 3rd place St. Malo Warriors and the 2nd place North Winnipeg Satelites. Both teams were looking for the win here as they begin their push for the playoffs.
The Satelites drew first blood, scoring just 1:10 into the game, and then again at the 9:40 mark to hold a 2-0 lead, which they carried into the second period. St. Malo managed to get one back, scoring on the power play at the 14:50 mark, and trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes. Just 6:38 into the 3rd, the Warriors tied the game up, and both teams played even the rest of the way, turning the game into a 3 point night. Overtime solved nothing between the teams, so off to a shootout it went. The Warriors sent three shooters, all unsuccessful, while the Satelites Matthew Carrey scored the lone goal to give the home side the additional point in the game.
The Satelites got single goals from Kevin Haines & Matthew Carrey, who also scored the shootout winner. Marc Hildebrand made 32 saves on 34 shots and 3 additional saves in overtime to record the victory.
The Warriors were led by Chris Baldoke & Matthew Hadley, who each had individual goals. Tanner Friesen made 33 saves in the game, losing in the shootout, but earning his team a single point.
Wednesday night’s action had the division leaders battling in Fisher River, as the Peguis Juniors played host to the Selkirk Fishermen. The Fish were looking to hold their lead over the Satelites in the standings, while the Juniors, who have clinched first place were looking to get into playoff form. The teams played to a scoreless first period. However just 1:50 into the 2nd, Peguis broke the tie and took a 1-0 lead. They added two more goals in the period, one on the powerplay and the Juniors held a 3-0 lead heading to the final period. Selkirk scored first in the 3rd, on the powerplay, to narrow the Peguis lead to 3-1. But it was all Peguis the rest of the way, who scored 3 more times, including 2 powerplay markers to close out the Fish 6-1.
Ralph Cochrane led the Juniors with 4 assists in the game. Devon Garson added 2 goals and an assist, while Waylon Neault & Presley Kirkness each added 2 assists. Ryan Delorme made 46 saves to record the win.
Selkirk’s single goal came from Trevor Paradoski. Bretton Fewchuk turned aside 37 shots in the loss.
With no games on Thursday, the next action took place on Friday night. The St. Malo Warriors visited the Lundar Falcons & North Winnipeg Satelites matched up against the Arborg Ice Dawgs.
St. Malo and Lundar played scoreless for most of the first, until the Warriors scored with just 1:19 remaining to take a 1-0 lead. They added 2 goals in the 2nd, holding a 3-0 lead, until the Falcons replied with two of their own, and the game went to the dressing room after 40 minutes with St. Malo clinging to a 3-2 lead over the home side. The 3rd period saw the Warriors open their lead to 5-2 with 2 more of their own, before Lundar drew close once again with 2 more goals making the score 5-4. St. Malo added an empty net goal for insurance, and the Warriors hung on for the 6-4 win.
Matthew Hadley led the Warriors with 4 assists in the game, while Chris Baldoke & Jeff Froese each added a goal & 2 assists. Arnel Evans & Cody Zulyniak rounded out the scoring with 2 goals apiece. Jordan Taylor made 33 saves in the Warriors net.
Braden Lussier scored twice for Lundar, while Orrin Hogue & Tyler Medeiros each added a goal and an assist. Troy Kaartinen chipped in with 2 assists. Andrew Smith made 23 saves in the loss.
The Satelites were hoping to catch Selkirk for first place and needed a win in Arborg to start this off. The game was scoreless until just under the mid-way mark of the first when Arborg opened the scoring. Winnipeg answered back however before the first finished & the score was 1-1 after one. The second period saw Arborg build a lead, scoring three times in the period, to the Satelites lone marker, and the home side held a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. In the 3rd, the Ice Dawgs increased their lead to 6-2 with two more goals, before the Satelites added one more to draw close, but just couldn’t mount any more of a comeback.
Arborg was led by Brady Collins with a goal & 2 assists and Ryan Pochailo who chipped in with 3 assists. Brock McMahon & Brett Barkman each scored once and added an assist. Jon Narverud made 40 saves in the game to record the win.
The Satelites were led by Kyle Collins with a goal and an assist. Cory Hyndman made 43 saves on 49 shots in the loss.
Saturday night had two games on the schedule. The first saw Norway House visit the St. Malo Warriors. The game was close for most of the first, until St. Malo blew the score wide open by scoring 4 times in a 2:14 span. The Warriors added another goal early in the 2nd, before Norway House got on the board. St. Malo added another goal, while Norway House countered. The second period came to a close with a 6-2 St. Malo lead. The third period opened with the Warriors tacking on 3 more goals to their total. Each team traded two goals each before the game finished. After putting Norway House in a big first period deficit, St. Malo cruised to an 11-4 victory.
The Warriors were led by Jeff Froese, who tallied 2 goals & 2 assists & Dimitri Daniluk who added 4 assists. Cody Zulyniak scored a hat trick & Matthew Hadley had 2 goals and an assist himself. Brett Keith, Brett Brakel, Jeff Williams, Jacob Klick-McMahon, Brady Stoupe & Arnel Evans each added 2 points. Tanner Friesen handled 26 saves for the win.
Brendan Hart led the North Stars with 3 assists, and Glen Paupanekis added 2 goals of his own. Darrian Sinclair & Kenley Monias each added 2 points. Brendan McLeod & Sean Bradburn split time in the net, with Bradburn suffering the loss.
The second contest Saturday saw the South division leading Selkirk Fishermen host the Lundar Falcons. The Fish scored the only goal of the first period, and carried this lead to the second. In the second, Selkirk opened up the game with 2 goals of their own, holding a 3-0 lead at one point, before Lundar got on the board to make the score 3-1 heading to the 3rd period. The third period saw Selkirk again score twice to open up a 5-1 lead, while Lundar answered with a goal of their own before Selkirk scored once more to finish the game off at 6-2.
Cory Balcaen paced the Fish with 2 goals and an assist, while Cale McBride added a goal and 2 assists of his own. Corbin Pasternak added 2 goals of his own & Tanner MacVicar scored once and added an assist. Jordan Liske made just 12 saves to record the win.
Lundar got single markers from Cole Wickenden & Tyler Medeiros, who also added an assist to lead the Falcons with 2 points. Derrick Peitsch & Andrew Smith split time in the Falcon goal, with Peitsch taking the loss in the game.
Superbowl Sunday had only one game on the schedule, as the Norway House North Stars made a stop in Arborg for a matinee contest on their way home. After a close checking scoreless first period, Arborg scored 4 unanswered goals in the 2nd period, and held a commanding 4-0 lead after 40 minutes. Norway House cut the Ice Dawgs’ lead in half in the 3rd, adding two of their own, however Arborg found the mark 3 more times as the period came to a close, and he finished with a 7-2 advantage.
Arborg was led by Rylan Veitch with a hat trick and an assist, while Spencer Kilbrei & Cory Kuldys each scored once and added 2 assists. Brett Barkman tallied twice for the Dawgs and Brady Collins & Brock McMahon each added 2 assists. Jon Narverud won his second straight of the weekend with a 30 save victory.
The North Stars Kenley Monias scored once and added an assists to lead with 2 points. Brendan McLeod turned aside a remarkable 52 shots in the contest.
With only two weeks to go of KJHL action before playoffs, there is still much to be decided in the standings. While the North looks to be set, the South Division remains open for movement, so every game down the stretch matters. Tuesday night has a big South Division matchup between St. Malo and Satelites. Wednesday night sees the struggling Lundar Falcons in Arborg for a matchup with Ice Dawgs. Friday night has two games on the schedule, with the Satelites visiting the Falcons & Selkirk in St. Malo. Saturday has the Satelites playing in St. Andrews against the Selkirk Fishermen, while Peguis makes a final northern trip, visiting Norway House on Saturday and OCN on Sunday. The final game on Sunday has the St. Malo Warriors in Arborg for a matchup with the Ice Dawgs. Be sure to check out the KJHL action this week as the playoff races heat up.
