The KJHL entered its final week of play with the North Division playoff matchups set, but some movement still possible in the South Division. All teams were looking to find their playoff form.
The week began on Tuesday night, when Lundar played a game against the Satelites. North Winnipeg jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the game was 4 minutes old, but Lundar perservered and scored twice before the period ended and sent the game deadlocked at 2 to the dressing room. In the second, Lundar scored the only goal of the period, and held a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. They game remained 3-2 until just under the mid-way point when the Satelites tied it, and then they scored the eventual game winner on the power-play with just 9 seconds remaining.
Matthew Carrey scored twice for the Satelites, while Kyle Collins added a goal & an assist. Both Sean Murray & Dylan McWha each added 2 assists in the game. Marc Hildebrand turned aside 34 shots to record the win.
Troy Kaartinen & Brendin Peixoto each scored once & recorded an assist to lead the Falcons. Derrick Peitsch made 42 saves in the Lundar goal.
Wednesday had two games on the schedule. North Winnipeg travelled north to Fisher River for a game against the Peguis Juniors. This game, it was Peguis turn to take a 2-0 lead before the game was 4 minutes old, but the Satelites tied it back up before the period closed with 2 of their own. Each team recorded a goal in the 2nd period, and after 40 minutes the game was tied 3-3. In the 3rd, each team scored, with Peguis first taking the lead, but North Winnipeg answering right back to tie the game back up. One minute 50 seconds into OT, North Winnipeg scored the game winner to grab the extra point.
Sean Murray led the Satelites with 3 goals in the game (and 5 points in the last 2 games). Cam Perdonic added 2 assists. Vinny Carriere scored the OT winner. Cory Hyndman made 62 saves on 66 shots for the win.
Jordan Anderson scored a goal & added 3 assists to lead Peguis. Ralph Cochrane also scored & added 2 assists & Presley Kirkness scored twice for the Juniors. Ryan Delorme made 48 saves in the game.
The other game on the Wednesday’s schedule saw the Selkirk Fishermen matchup against the Lundar Falcons. The game was scoreless for the first half of the period, until the Fishermen scored twice in the remaining 9 minutes to hold a 2-0 lead. They added 2 more goals in the 2nd and led 4-0 before the Falcons answered with one of their own. That was all the Fishermen needed as they played a scoreless 3rd period and held onto the 4-1 win.
Selkirk got single goals from Michael Smiley, Kyle Pache, Trevor Paradoski & Tanner MacVicar. Bretton Fewchuk was nearly perfect in the game, making 24 saves on 25 shots.
The Falcons lone goal came from Jason Nikkel. Derrick Peitsch turned aside 33 shots in the loss.
With no games Thursday, the next action took place on Friday.
With two games on the schedule, the first saw Arborg pay a visit to Selkirk. The Ice Dawgs scored twice in the first, with Selkirk answering once, and Arborg held a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Selkirk tied the game early in the 2nd, but then Arborg answered with 2 of their own, and held a 4-2 lead after the 2nd period closed. The Fishermen drew close, making the score 4-3, then surrendered a 5th goal to Arborg and trailed 5-3 just before the midway point. From the 11 minute mark on, it was all Selkirk, who poured it on and scored 3 times in that span to take a 6-5 win, including the game winner in the final minute.
Jeremy Pachkowsky led the Fishermen with a goal & 2 assists for 3 points. Trevor Paradoski scored twice for the Fish, while Cale McBride added 2 assists of his own. Newcomer Kyle Ilchena added a goal and an assist also. Jordan Liske made 33 saves in the win.
Arborg got a pair of goals from both Cory Kuldys & Brett Barkman. Brady Collins & Brendon Barron each added 2 assists in the contest. Travis Schalk made 31 saves in the Ice Dawgs goal.
Also Friday, the St. Malo Warriors played host to the Peguis Juniors. St. Malo held an early 1-0 lead and took this to the dressing room after the first. They increased this lead to 3-0 in the second before Peguis got on the board with one of their own. The second period ended 3-1 Warriors. St. Malo added a 4th goal just seconds into the 3rd period, then gave up a Peguis goal not long after. With the Warriors leading 4-2, Peguis found their offence, and scored twice before the 3rd ended, and tied the game up at 4 all. Overtime solved nothing, and the teams went a shootout, where after 6 rounds of shooters, Peguis prevailed with a 5-4 victory.
Waylon Neault scored once & added 3 assists, while Darryl Flett scored twice & added 2 assists for the Juniors. Tyler McKay added a goal himself & 2 assists in the game. Keifer Tacan made 42 saves in the game to record the shootout victory.
Brett Brakel recorded 3 assists to lead the Warriors, while Dimitri Daniluk added a goal & an assist. Jordan Taylor made 40 saves in the shootout loss.
Saturday also had two games on the schedule.
The North Winnipeg Satelites made their final trip of the regular season to Lundar for a game against the Falcons. The Satelites broke a first period scoreless tie with two goals in the final 7 minutes to hold a 2-0 lead. They added to this lead with 2 more goals in the 2nd to hold a 4-0 lead before the Falcons got on the board prior to the end of the period. The 3rd period saw the Falcons score twice early, to draw within one goal, but then the Satelites added 3 of their own, and finished with a 7-3 win.
Kyle Collins, Keilan Mott & Mathew Carrey each scored one goal & added 2 assists in the game to lead the Satelites. Nico Lisi scored a goal & added an assist & Zach Chouia added 2 assists. Cory Hyndman made 27 saves in the victory.
Braden Lussier scored all three Falcons goal to record a hat trick. Michael Shannon added 2 assists in the game. Derrick Peitsch made 30 saves on 37 shots.
The final meeting of the regular season between the OCN Storm & the Norway House North Stars took place also. With 6 goals in the first period, there was lots of offensive action, and OCN held a 4-2 lead after 20 minutes. The second saw OCN add two more goals to their total, and hold a commanding 6-2 lead going into the final frame. The 3rd period saw OCN add two more, while Norway House got one back, and the game ended with a final score of 8-3 OCN.
Brandon Sinclair Martin led the Storm with 2 goals & 2 assists, while both Brady Cable & Jared Tobacco added 4 assists each. Drake Lathlin & Wayne Folster both scored twice & added an assist, while Brody Personius added a goal & an assist for the Storm. Matt Pyke made 44 saves on 47 shots to get the OCN victory.
Darrian Sinclair scored twice for the North Stars & Edward Lachose added 2 assists. Both Norway House goaltenders played, while Brendan McLeod suffered the loss.
On Sunday, the final game of the regular season had long-time rivals the North Winnipeg Satelites in Selkirk to play the Fishermen. With playoff positions decided at this point, both teams were looking to make a statement and playing for pride. As in most Selkirk vs Satelites games, the intensity level was ratcheted up a few notches. The game was scoreless until Selkirk got their first just past the midway mark of the first. They added a second goal to hold a 2-0 before the Satelites got one back prior to the end of the first. In the second, the Fishermen got the lone goal, a shorthanded marker. They held a 3-1 lead going into the 3rd period. Just over 5 minutes in the 3rd, the Satelites narrowed the gap to 3-2, but that was all they could muster & the Fish held on for the win.
Devan Lobb paced the Fishermen with 2 assists in the game. Colton Zembik, Jeremy Pachkowsky & Jesse Reid-Whyte each scored individual goals. Bretton Fewchuk made 33 saves on 35 shots for the win.
The Satelites were led by Howard Grieves who recorded assists on both North Winnipeg goals. Vinny Carriere & Bobby High each scored single markers. Marc Hildebrand turned aside 27 shots in the loss.
The regular season concluded this weekend, and now into playoffs. Congratulations to the Peguis Juniors, who won the North Division & finished first overall in the KJHL. Congratulations to the Selkirk Fishermen for winning the South Division.
