The final week of play in the KJHL before Christmas got rolling this week with a rescheduled game on Tuesday night between the Peguis Juniors and the Fisher River Hawks. Peguis provided much of the offence in this one, scoring 5 times in the first period and 2 more in the second to hold a 7-0 lead after 40 minutes. The Juniors added a goal early in the third, but then Fisher River broke the shutout bid on the powerplay. Peguis found the mark 5 more times after that and cruised to a 13-1 win over the Hawks.
Darryl Flett paced the Juniors with 3 goals and 3 assists. Tyler McKay added 3 goals of his own, and 2 assists, while Joseph Sutherland scored once and tacked on 4 helpers. Brennan Cochrane added a goal and 3 assists for 4 points, while Tyler Woodhouse scored twice and added 2 assists. Christian Cochrane, Devon Garson, Dennis Stevenson, & Jesse Flett all had multiple point nights. Keifer Tacan made 26 saves in the game to record the win.
Nodin Duck scored the lone goal for Fisher River, with an assist to McCraie Sinclair. Ryan Bruyere faced 56 shots in the game, making 43 saves.
Wednesday night saw the Hawks back in action, this time hosting the Selkirk Fishermen. Selkirk opened the scoring early in the first, and then added 3 more goals, including 2 on the power play, to hold a 4-0 lead. The second saw more Fish goals, adding 2 more to their total. Fisher River did get on the board with a power play goal in the dying minute of the 2nd, but the Fishermen had built a 6-1 lead. The 3rd period was all Selkirk, as they tacked on 6 goals and walked away with a 12-1 win.
The Fishermen were led by Cale McBride, who scored 4 goals and added an assist. Jeremy Pachkowsky added 2 goals of his own and an assist, while Griffin Steeves scored once and added 2 assists. Cody Melo, Brayden Kowalchuk and Tyndall Fontaine each scored once and added a helper. Dylan Painchaud-Niemi was in on the scoring with 2 assists. Jordan Liske turned aside 38 of the 39 shots he faced recording the victory.
Fisher River’s lone goal was scored by Gavin Mason. Ryan Bruyere started the game, making 13 saves on 17 shots. He was relieved late in the first by Dakota Johnson who made another 33 saves in the game.
Across the Interlake, the Arborg Ice Dawgs played host to the North Winnipeg Satelites. Arborg opened the scoring just under 3 minutes, and added a second goal to their total in the final minute of the first. The second period started the same way, with the Ice Dawgs adding a goal to their total in the first minute, and holding a commanding 3-0 lead. North Winnipeg answered back with a shorthanded goal, only to have Arborg score two more times and hold a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes. The Satelites narrowed the Ice Dawgs lead to 5-2 with a power play goal early in the third, but that was all they could muster, and Arborg skated away with the win on home ice.
The Ice Dawgs were led by Trent Kroeker with a goal and an assist and Travis Kilbrei with 2 assists. Jayde Barkman, Cal Finnson, Cory Kuldys & Deric Gulay added single goals. Jon Narverud made 30 saves on 32 shots to record the win.
Kyle Collins scored once and added an assist for the Satelites. Sean Murray scored a single goal. Keaton Klassen made 37 saves in the game for North Winnipeg.
Thursday’s lone game saw the Peguis Juniors play host to the Lundar Falcons. Lundar opened the scoring in the first period, but Peguis answered with 3 goals of their own to hold a 3-1 first period advantage. The Juniors increased their lead with 5 straight goals in the 2nd and held an 8-1 lead until the Falcons scored a powerplay marker to cut the lead to 8-2. The 3rd period saw Peguis tack on two more goals, and then coast to a 10-2 victory on home ice.
Tyler McKay scored 5 times to lead the Peguis Juniors. Theoren Spence added 3 goals and an assist, while both Darryl Flett & Jesse Flett each recorded 4 assists. Joseph Sutherland added 3 assists, and Dennis Stevenson & Presley Beaulieu both had 2 point games. Jarrod Smith made 27 saves in goal for the Juniors to record the win.
Skyler Desjarlais scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Falcons. Riley Scott added a lone goal. Randy Quick faced 52 shots in the game, making 42 saves.
Friday night’s action had two games scheduled. The St. Malo Warriors made a stop in Lundar for a game against the Falcons. The game was scoreless until late in the first when St. Malo notched a shorthanded goal, and then scored in the dying seconds of the period to take a 2-0 lead. Lundar cut the lead in half in the 2nd, only to have the Warriors open it back up to 2. The Falcons scored another goal late in the period, and the Warriors held a slim 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. The 3rd period saw the game remain close, with Lundar scoring two goals, just 38 seconds apart to grab a 4-3 lead. St. Malo battled hard, and scored a goal with 30 seconds to go to tie the game and send it to overtime. With each team earning a single point in the game, it was the Warriors who prevailed with the game winning goal, just under 2 minutes into the extra frame.
St. Malo was led by Jeff Froese & Bryden Johnson with a goal and 2 assists each. Jared Magne scored once – the overtime winner, and added an assist. Tanner Friesen made 31 saves in goal for the Warriors to claim the win.
The Falcons’ got a goal and 2 assists from Braden Lussier. Brenden Carlson added 2 assists, while Aldyn Gray scored once and added an assist. Andrew Smith made 36 saves in the game, earning his team a point.
Also on Friday, the Arborg Ice Dawgs and Selkirk Fishermen locked horns. It was Selkirk scoring the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Arborg tied the game in the second with a powerplay goal, only to see Selkirk take the lead a few minutes later. The Ice Dawgs added 2 goals before the 2nd was over, including a shorthanded goal and took a 3-2 lead into the 3rd. That lead evaporated quickly in the 3rd as Selkirk tied the game. But from that point, it was all Arborg, who scored 5 unanswered goals and went on to an 8-3 win.
The Ice Dawgs’ Cory Kuldys led all scorers with 3 goals and an assist. Travis Kilbrei added 2 goals of his own and an assist. Trent Kroeker chipped in with 2 assists, while Carter Comeau added a goal and an assist. Jon Narverud turned aside 37 shots in the game to earn the win.
Selkirk was led by Jeremy Pachkowsky with a goal and an assist. Cory Balcaen & Griffin Steeves added single goals. Bretton Fewchuk made 40 saves on 45 shots, suffering the loss before he was relieved by Jordan Liske who made 12 saves on 15 shots.
Saturday night saw a single game on the schedule, as the North Winnipeg Satelites played host to the Norway House North Stars. The first period saw the Satelites start fast, scoring 5 times in the first 10 minutes, before adding one more as the period closed. Norway House answered with one of their own, but were down 6-1 after 20 minutes. The teams traded goals back and forth in the second, with the North Stars scoring first. After 40 minutes, it was the Satelites who held a 9-3 lead. Norway House mounted a bit of a comeback in the 3rd, scoring 3 times to draw to 9-6, but the Satelites were just too much on this night, and ended with 2 more goals, cruising to an 11-6 victory on home ice.
Mathew Carrey led the Satelites with 2 goals and 3 assists, while Sean Murray & Kyle Collins both added 2 goals each and 2 assists. Chris Vallance, Vinny Carriere & Jason Campbell all scored once and recorded an assist. Ben Ingimundson tallied 2 assists. Marc Hildebrand made 32 saves on 38 shots to record the win for the Satelites.
Glen Paupanekis scored once and added 3 assists for the North Stars. Sam McKay Jr also scored and added 2 assists. Garrison Garrioch scored twice, while Kenley Monias recorded 2 helpers. Jameson Scott added a goal and an assist. Brendan McLeod started the game, making 16 saves on 22 shots. Jared Gore replaced him in the 2nd, and allowed 5 goals on 33 shots over the remaining 40 minutes.
On Sunday, the Selkirk Fishermen saw the Norway House North Stars roll into town, who are on the second of a 3 game road trip. It was the North Stars who opened the scoring in this game. Selkirk responded with a goal of their own, only to have Norway House add a shorthanded goal to hold a 2-1 lead. The Fish scored late in the first to tie the game after 20 minutes. The second period was all Selkirk, as the Fishermen scored 4 times to hold a 6-2 lead. There was more of the same in the 3rd, which saw the Fishermen add 4 more goals to their total and cruise to the 10-2 win.
The Fishermen saw Karl Fey, Cory Balcaen & Drayton Mendrun each score twice and add an assist. Michael Smiley & Cale McBride both added 2 assists. Tyndall Fontain, Jeremy Pachkowsky, Corbin Pasternak & Milan Horanski all added single goals. Jordan Liske stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced to record the win.
The North Stars saw Trevor Scribe & Travis Scribe each score single goals. Brendan McLeod faced 50 shots, making 40 saves in the game.
The St. Malo Warriors visited Fisher River to meet up with the Hawks. St. Malo scored twice in the first 1:05 of the game to hold a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Warriors added 4 more goals to go up 6-0 before Fisher River got on the board with a goal of their own. St. Malo then scored two more times before the second closed and held an 8-1 lead. The Warriors tacked on 2 more third period goals, and held a commanding 10-1 lead, before the Hawks added one more to their total, but dropped the decision 10-2 to St. Malo.
The Warriors’ were led by Jared Magne who scored a hat trick and added 4 assists, and Bryden Johnson who also scored a hat trick and added 3 assists. Jeff Williams recorded 2 goals, while Blaise Nordine, Jordy Hill & Justin Collette each added two assists. Tanner Friesen made 11 saves on 12 shots, recording the win, but giving way to Cole Stoupe to see some action in the third. Stoupe turned aside 7 of the 8 shots he faced.
Fisher River got 2 goals from Darryl Thaddeus. Jordan Sutherland added two assists. Dakota Johnson started the game, making 39 saves on 47 shots. He gave way to Ryan Bruyere in the 3rd, who made 20 saves on 22 shots.
A rare Monday night game, rescheduled from November, pitted the Norway House North Stars against the St. Malo Warriors. St. Malo scored the lone first period goal and held a 1-0 lead. The Warriors added 2 more goals to their total in the second period, and held a 3-0 advantage heading into the final frame. They added a powerplay marker early in the 3rd and were in full control before the North Stars broke the shutout bid with a goal of their own. Not to be outdone, the Warriors tacked on 3 more goals, including a shorthanded and a powerplay goal. Norway House managed one more goal, but dropped the decision 7-2 to St. Malo.
The Warriors saw another strong game from Bryden Johnson, who scored twice and added an assist and sits near the top of the scoring leaders. Tyler Kemball, Kyle Fortin, Jared Magne & Justin Collette all added a goal and an assist each. Jordan Taylor made 33 saves on the 35 shots he faced to record the win.
Norway House got single goals from Mitchell Simpson & Kenley Monias. Brendan McLeod made 29 saves in the game.
Two additional games from the weekend, where Peguis was to be in OCN to play the Storm on Saturday and Sunday night, had to be rescheduled for later in January, as the Storm faced injuries and personnel issues that left them unable to ice a team.
It’s a tight race in the KJHL. There are five teams at the top of the standings who are within 3 points of each other and first place. All teams are looking to get the 2nd half of the season off on the right foot in January and make a strong case heading into playoffs.
