The first full week of KJHL action after the Christmas break got started on Tuesday night with 2 games on the schedule. In Peguis, the Selkirk Fishermen and Peguis Juniors were making a bid to try and take top spot in the league. Peguis scored the opening goal of the game on the powerplay. Selkirk tied the game back up, but the Juniors added one more before the period ended & held a 2-1 lead. With a shorthanded goal and an even strength goal in the second, the Juniors opened up a 4-1 second period lead. Selkirk cut the lead in half in the 3rd, but Peguis added one more to their total. Selkirk scored two more times late in the 3rd, including a power play marker in the last minute, but couldn’t find the equalizer with their goalie on the bench.
Peguis was led by Christian Cochrane who scored once and added 2 assists. Presley Kirkness scored twice, including the game winner. Joseph Sutherland added 2 assists. Keifer Tacan made 29 saves in the Juniors goal for the win.
Michael Smiley & Cale McBride led the Fishermen with a goal and an assist each. Daniel Fiebelkorn & Tyndall Fontaine added single goals. Jordan Liske made 35 saves in goal for the Fishermen.
In the second game of the evening, the Lundar Falcons visited the North Winnipeg Satelites at Mosienko Arena. North Winnipeg opened the scoring with a power play goal. Lundare scored a power play goal of their own, and then added an even strength goal and held a 2-1 first period lead. The Falcons opened up a 3-1 lead early in the 2nd. The Satelites responded with 2 goals of their own, and the game was knotted up at 3-3 after 40 minutes. The third period saw more close play, as North Winnipeg scored a power play marker to take the lead just before the midway point. Lundar tied the game back up with just under 6 minutes to go, and neither team could end this game in regulation. It took 3:36 of overtime for the Satelites to grab the extra point and win the game.
North Winnipeg’s Kyle Collins led the team with a goal and 2 assists, while Sean Murray added 3 assists. Mathew Carrey also scored twice. Keaton Klassen turned aside 30 of the 34 shots he faced to record the win.
Both Cody Paul and Storm Swan scored twice and tallied an assist to lead the Falcons. Randy Quick made 41 saves to grab a single point for his team.
Wednesday evening had one game on the schedule, as the Arborg Ice Dawgs roll into the Fisher River to lock horns with the Hawks. Arborg opened the scoring in the first near the midway point, and then added a second goal to their lead & held a 2-0 advantage. The second saw Arborg run away with the lead, totally 4 goals on their way to a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes. Fisher River broke the shutout bid in the 3rd, but couldn’t muster any more offence, as the Ice Dawgs added one more, and went on to the 7-1 victory.
Travis Kilbrei scored a hat trick to lead the Ice Dawgs, while Talon Kelly, Cory Kuldys & Colton Davies scored once and added an assist. Cal Finnson, Trent Kroeker, Carter Comeau & Byron Gard all added 2 assists. Jon Narverud stopped 44 of the 45 shots he faced in earning the win.
McCraie Sinclair scored the lone Hawks’ goal with an assist from Jared Thickfoot. Dakota Johnson faced 39 shots in the game, stopping 32.
Friday evening saw 6 of the KJHL 9 teams in action. One game pitted the OCN Storm against the Selkirk Fishermen. Selkirk scored twice in the first period, and held a 2-0 lead. OCN cut the lead to 2-1, only to have Selkirk score less than a minute later to regain a 2 goal lead. OCN found the mark late in the 2nd, and the game was 3-2 after 40 minutes. Selkirk scored early in the 3rdto take a 4-2 lead. They added a late goal, just before the Storm scored one back of their own. The Fishermen claimed the win with a 5-2 victory.
Tanner MacVicar scored once & added 3 assists to pace the Fishermen. Karl Fey added 2 goals and an assist, while Cory Balcaen chipped in with 3 assists. Bretton Fewchuk handled 15 saves in the game to record the win.
Maxwell Shoo scored all 3 OCN goals, with assists on them all by Drew Morin. Luke Penner faced 50 shots in the game, making 45 saves.
The Lundar Falcons played host to the Norway House North Stars. The North Stars took advantage of the powerplay, scoring twice in the first, and adding an even-strength goal to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Falcons scored one back, but the first ended 3-1. The second period saw Norway House add 2 more goals, and take a commanding 5-1 lead. Neither team found the goal in the 3rd, and Norway House came out winners with a 5-1 victory.
The North Stars were led by Jeremy Folster with a goal and an assist & Tie Braun, who recorded 2 assists. Sean Bradburn made 24 saves in the game to record the victory.
Lundar got their lone goal from Troy Kaartinen. Randy Quick turned aside 27 shots in the game.
Arborg Ice Dawgs were in action in St. Malo to match up with the Warriors. Arborg took a 1-0 lead 46 seconds into the game. St. Malo countered with 2 goals of their own however to take the lead. Arborg added a goal, and the first remained tied 2-2. The second period saw the teams trade goals, and still remain tied up, albeit at 3-3. Arborg took the lead for a short time in the 3rd, only to have St. Malo answer back just over a minute later. It was the Ice Dawgs who went ahead for good with 7:16 remaining. They added an empty net goal in the dying seconds, and held on for the 6-4 win.
Arborg’s Travis Kilbrei scored 3 goals and added 2 assists in the game to pace the Ice Dawgs with 5 points. Talon Kelly added 2 assists. Jon Narverud made 31 saves on the 35 shots he faced to take the win.
Both Blaise Nordine & Bryden Johnson scored twice each for St. Malo. Triston Eastman & Jeff Williams both added 2 assists. Tanner Friesen made 39 saves on the 44 shots he faced in the game.
The game between North Winnipeg and Peguis was postponed due to Peguis having a number of players out with illness.
Saturday’s schedule saw 2 games being played. The Arborg Ice Dawgs played host to the Norway House North Stars. This was a close-checking game for most of the first, when Arborg took the lead on the powerplay. Norway House answered back in the final 2 minutes of the period and the game was tied 1-1 after one. The second period saw the North Stars jump out to a 3-1 lead of 2 goals, including their own powerplay marker. Arborg however scored twice in 13 seconds, and then added one more in the final seconds of the period to take a 4-3 lead to the dressing room. The 3rdperiod’s lone goal was scored by Arborg with 1 second remaining, to ensure a 5-3 win for the homeside Ice Dawgs.
Arborg was led by Talon Kelly & Cory Kuldys who each scored a goal and added an assist. Travis Kilbrei chipped in with 2 helpers. Travis Schalk made 32 saves in the game to record the win.
Norway House’s Austin Ross & Kenley Monias each scored once and added an assist, and Jameson Scott was in on 2 goals. Sean Bradburn made 39 saves in the game.
The second game on Saturday evening saw the OCN Storm play the St. Malo Warriors. The Storm took the lead in the first, however the Warriors countered and the game was tied 1-1 after one. St. Malo scored the lone goal of the 2nd, a powerplay marker to hold a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. OCN tied the game on the powerplay in the 3rd, and then added the game-winning goal with less than a minute to go, and held on for a 3-2 comeback win.
Mitchell Tilley scored twice for the Storm, while Maxwell Shoo added 2 assists. Luke Penner turned aside 32 of the 34 shots he faced in the game to take the win.
St. Malo got single goals from Triston Eastman & Bryden Johnson. Jordan Taylor made 25 saves in the game.
The lone game Sunday was the KJHL All-Star game, hosted by the Peguis Juniors. The game saw the North Team win by a 7-6 score over the South Team.
Upcoming KJHL action kicks off Wednesday night as the Fisher River Hawks play the Arborg Ice Dawgs. Thursday sees the OCN Storm battle the Norway House North Stars. Friday night’s scheduled action has the Lundar Falcons playing host to the North Winnipeg Satelites & the St. Malo Warriors visiting the Peguis Juniors. On Saturday, the OCN Storm stop into Winnipeg to lock-up with the Satelites & the Selkirk Fishermen are in Norway House to play the North Stars. Sunday’s action see Selkirk play game 2 against the North Stars, while OCN heads South to play the St. Malo Warriors. Also, the Satelites play in Fisher River against the Hawks.
There are also two exhibition games to note this week: The Nipigon Elks of Northern Ontario will be playing the Fisher River Hawks on Saturday night at 8pm in Fisher River. On Sunday, Nipigon will play the Peguis Juniors at 12 noon at the Peguis Multiplex.
