Week 14 Wrap Up

Week 14 Wrap Up

S.Heather

Action in the KJHL is heating up as teams have about a month left of play before playoffs.

After having the All-Star game on Sunday, the league had a few days off.  There was one game on schedule Wednesday night as the Fisher River Hawks made a stop in Arborg to battle the Ice Dawgs.  The game remained scoreless in the first until the midway point, when Arborg opened the scoring & then added 3 more before the period was over.  The second period saw the Ice Dawgs increase their lead by 3 more to 7-0.  Arborg tallied another 3 to lead 10-0 before Fisher River broke the shutout bid with a powerplay goal.  Arborg added one more on the powerplay to rout the Hawks 11-1.

Talon Kelly scored once and added 3 assists, while Colton Davies recorded a hat trick.  Cal Finnson scored 2 goals and earned an assist and Carter Comeau recorded 3 asissts.  Jayde Barkman, Auzzie Loewen-Palmer & Cory Kuldys all had multiple point games as well.  Travis Schalk made 15 saves to record the win.

Fisher River’s lone goal was scored by Jordan Sutherland on an assist from Brent Courchene.  Dakota Johnson turned aside 65 of the 76 shots he faced for a .855 save percentage.

Thursday evenings action put the OCN Storm in Norway House to play the North Stars.  Norway House struck first with a power play marker & then added a late goal to take a 2-0 first period lead.  OCN got one back nearing the midway point of the 2nd, before both Norway House and OCN scored late in the 2nd, leaving Norway House with a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.  The North Stars doubled their lead on the power play early in the 3rd.  OCN scored less than a minute later to cut the lead to one, and then fired a power play marker of their own just past the midway mark to tie the game.  The final half of the third settled nothing, and the game went to overtime.  Quickly, and on the power play, the Storm struck just 50 seconds into the extra frame to earn the win.

The Storm got 2 goals, including the OT winner, and an assist from Justice Genaille.  Drake Lathlin, Mitchell Tilley & Tanner Koroscil each scored once and added an assist, while Dustin Dorion recorded 2 assists in the game.  Luke Penner made 40 saves in earning the win.

Sam McKay led the North Stars with 2 goals.  Jameson Scott & Kenley Monias both added 2 assists.  Sean Bradburn made 39 saves in the game, recording the overtime loss.

On the docket for Friday night, the North Winnipeg Satelites rolled into Lundar for a game agains the Falcons.  North Winnipeg jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead.  The Falcons’ answered back with 2 goals of their own in the 2nd, one on the powerplay & one shorthanded to tie the game heading to the final 20 minutes.  In the 3rd, it was the Falcons who scored the only goal, and held on for a hard fought 3-2 upset win.

Lundar was led by Cody Paul who scored once and added an assist.  Jory Ross chipped in with 2 assists.  Breyden Turner & Tavish Quinn both scored single goals.  Andrew Smith started the game, making 15 saves on 17 shots.  Randy Quick played the third, earning the win, and stopping all 6 shots he faced.

Howard Grieves & Kevin Haines scored single goals for the Satelites.  Marc Hildebrand made 30 saves on 33 shots in the game.

Also Friday, the schedule saw the St. Malo Warriors in Peguis to battle the Juniors.  Peguis scored 4 times in the first period to hold a commanding lead after 20 minutes.  The teams combined for 8 goals in the 2nd period – with St. Malo scoring 5 times and Peguis twice, leaving the Juniors with a 7-5 lead.  Peguis added the only 2 goals of the 3rd period, and held on for a 9-5 win.

The Juniors were led by Presley Kirkness with a hat trick & Darryl Flett with 3 assists.  Theoren Spence, Tyler McKay & Harold Linklater each scored once and added an assist.  Keifer Tacan made 30 saves on 35 shots to record the win.

The Satelites were led by Jason Campbell with 2 assists.  Darrel Kilburn, Vinny Carriere & Chris Vallance each scored single goals.  Marc Hildebrand turned aside 26 of the 28 shots he faced to record the win.

Selkirk was in Norway House for a weekend of action against the North Stars.  The Fishermen scored first, only to have the North Stars tie the game.  However the Fish added one more before the first closed out, and held a 2-1 lead.  Norway House scored shorthanded in the 2nd to tie the game, but the Fishermen returned the favour on the powerplay and held a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.  Norway House again tied the game, only to surrender that to the Fishermen.  With just 10 seconds remaining in the game, the North Stars scored the tying goal and sent the game to overtime.  The bonus frame of OT solved nothing in the see-saw battle, and the game was forced to go to a shootout.  In the shootout, Norway House could only score once, while Selkirk scored twice to earn the extra point.

Selkirk was led by Karl Fey who scored a goal and added an assist.  Cory Balcaen, Corbin Pasternak & Cale McBride each added single goals.  Jordan Liske made 43 saves on 47 shots to record the shootout win.

There were three games on Sunday afternoon.  Selkirk was looking to sweep the weekend series with Norway House.  This ended up being another close game, with no scoring in the first period.  Selkirk opened the scoring early in the 2nd with a powerplay marker.  Norway House answered back before the period was done, and left the game tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.  Selkirk scored two goals, 31 seconds apart in the 3rd period to take a 3-1 lead, and eventually hold on for the win.

The Fishermen got single goals from Michael Smiley, Griffin Steeves & Karl Fey.  Bretton Fewchuk made 27 saves to earn the victory.

Norway House’s lone goal was scored by Austin Ross.  Sean Bradburn played well again, turning aside 36 of the 39 shots he faced.

North Winnipeg was led by Kyle Collins with 2 goals and an assist.  Chris Vallance & Jason Campbell both scored twice, while Scott Douglas, Bryan MacKenzie & Kyle Grand each recorded two assists.  Mathew Carrey also scored once and added an assist.  Keaton Klassen made 21 saves on 22 shots to take the win.

The Hawks’ goal was scored by Jordan Sutherland.  Jarret Hogue made 43 saves on 51 shots in the game.

The last KJHL game of the week saw the OCN Storm playing the St. Malo Warriors.  St. Malo scored the lone goal of the first period on the powerplay.  In the 2nd, the Warriors added 3 more to their total and held a commanding 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.  The Warriors were up 5-0 before OCN got on the board, only to surrender 3 more to St. Malo, who cruised to an 8-1 upset win.
