This week’s KJHL action kicked off Tuesday night, with 2 games on the schedule.
The Fisher River Hawks are looking to build some success for next season, while the Peguis Juniors are looking to round into playoff form. Peguis opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period. The second period saw the Juniors open the floodgates with 7 more goals to hold a commanding 8-0 lead. Peguis poured the offence on in the 3rd, closing out the game with 4 more goals, and handily winning 12-0.
Presley Kirkness led Peguis with four goals and an assist while Joseph Sutherland and Dylan Stevenson each had a goal and three assists. Darryl Flett dished out four assists. Tyler Woodhouse scored twice and added an assist while Tyrell Armstrong was on the scoresheet with 3 helpers. Theoren Spence, Devon Garson, Presley Beaulieu & Jesse Flett all had 2 point nights. Jarrod Smith made 24 saves to get the shutout and the win.
No Hawks’ player was able to beat Smith on this night, however Jarrett Hogue made 53 saves in goal.
Arborg was in Winnipeg to play the Satelites in a key battle for playoff position. The Ice Dawgs struck first, scoring just 25 seconds into the game. The Satelites evened the score with a shorthanded marker, and the first period ended 1-1. Arborg took the lead with a powerplay goal in the 2nd period. The Satelites again tied it up, with a powerplay marker of their own. Arborg added 2 more before the period was over & held a 4-2 lead. The 3rd period remained that way, until the Ice Dawgs scored in the final minute to ensure the win.
Cory Kuldys led the Ice Dawgs with 4 goals. Travis Kilbrei added 3 assists, while Talon Kelly tacked on 2 assists. Jon Narverud made 29 saves on 31 shots to record the win.
North Winnipeg got single goals from Sean Murray & Vinny Carriere. Marc Hildebrand made 34 saves on 39 shots in the Satelites’ goal.
Thursday night sees four teams in action. The North Winnipeg Satelites looked to break their recent losing skid as they visited the Fisher River Hawks. The Satelites jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game by the midway point, only to have Fisher River battle back to tie the game with 2 goals of their own. North Winnipeg scored 3 more times over the remaining 6 minutes of the period and held a 5-2 first period lead. The Satelites scored one in the second period. The 3rd period saw the Satelites score 5 more goals, while Fisher River managed to pot one of their own, and North Winnipeg rolled to an 11-3 win.
Kevin Haines led the Satelites with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Jason Campbell & Vinny Carriere each scored once and added 3 assists. Sean Murray, Beau Zelenewich, Mathew Carrey, Colin Yarchuk & Dylan Wittinger all chipped in with 2 points. Marc Hildebrand stopped 16 of the 19 shots he faced for the win.
Darryl Thaddeus continued his strong play for the Hawks, scoring twice, while Jordan Sutherland recorded two assists. Tristin Starr scored the other Hawks goal. Jarrett Hogue made a remarkable 74 saves on 85 shots in the game.
Peguis rolled into St. Malo to challenge the Warriors. Peguis opened the scoring in the game, only to have St. Malo answer right back. The Juniors then took a 2-1 lead, but the Warriors answered with 2 straight powerplay goals, and held a 3-2 lead. Peguis scored a powerplay goal of their own with less than a minute to play in the period to knot the game at 3-3. The second period saw a flurry of more goals, with Peguis scoring 4 times in the period, including 3 powerplay goals, and St. Malo finding the mark 3 times, which left the game 7-6 Peguis after 40 minutes. The 3rd period saw more offence, this time only from the Juniors, who scored 5 more times and doubled-up on the Warriors with a 12-6 final.
Tyler McKay led Peguis with 3 goals and 2 assists. Darryl Flett scored twice & added 2 asissts, while Christian Cochrane & Presley Kirkness each scored a single goal & added an assist. Romano Paul dished 4 assists in the game. Joseph Sutherland scored once and added 2 assists and Tyler Woodhouse scored twice and added an assist. Denis Baptiste chipped in with 2 helpers. Keifer Tacan turned aside 27 of the 33 shots he faced to record the win.
Jared Magne scored once and added 3 assists, while Jeff Froese scored twice and recorded an assist for the Warriors. Justin Collette was credited with 2 assists. Jordan Taylor made 51 saves in the game.
Friday evening had one game scheduled between the Arborg Ice Dawgs and the Lundar Falcons. Lundar jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring 11 seconds apart. Arborg got on the scoreboard late in the first, but the Falcons held a 2-1 lead. The second period opened with another quick Lundar strike. The Ice Dawgs again cut the lead back to one, however the Falcons’ added 2 more to their total and held a 5-2 advantage. Arborg answered with a powerplay marker, but went to the dressing room down 5-3. The 3rd period saw more Falcons’ offence, adding the lone goal of the period on the powerplay, and upsetting the Arborg Ice Dawgs by a 6-3 score.
Trent Laycock & Storm Swan both scored once and added 2 assists, while Aldyn Gray recorded a goal and an assist. Randy Quick made 36 saves on 39 shots in the Lundar goal to take the win.
Trent Kroeker dished out 3 assists, and Travis Kilbrei scored once and added an assist for 2 points for Arborg. Travis Schalk made 16 saves on 21 shots after starting the game. He gave way to Jon Narverud, who made 11 saves on 12 shots.
Saturday originally had 3 games on the schedule, however Norway House’s bus broke down and OCN was unable to travel due to road conditions. That left a single game Saturday night, between the Peguis Juniors and the Selkirk Fishermen for what would be first play in the standings. Selkirk scored first in the game, however Peguis tied it a few minutes later. The Fish scored one more after that, and held a 2-1 first period lead. Neither team scored over the 2nd period, and Selkirk was clinging to a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. The 3rd period saw the Juniors tie the game at 2-2. Just past the midway point of the period, Selkirk notched a shorthanded goal, and then proceeded to add 2 powerplay goals, and win their 8th in a row, by a 5-2 margin.
Jeremy Pachkowsky led the Fishermen with 4 assists, while Cale McBride scored twice and added an assist, and Karl Fey scored once and added 2 assists. Michael Smiley and Cody Melo each scored lone goals. Jordan Liske was solid in goal, turning aside 28 of the 30 shots he faced to record the win.
Peguis got single goals from Joseph Sutherland & Christian Cochrane. Keifer Tacan made 24 saves on the 29 shots he faced.
Sunday also had originally had 3 games scheduled, however both of the games involving Norway House and OCN were cancelled. That left a lone game Sunday night, as Fisher River made a stop in Steeltown to play the Selkirk Fishermen. Selkirk scored the lone goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. The Fish added 2 more to their total, and held a 3-0 lead before the Hawks broke through and scored one of their own. Selkirk added 2 more goals, both on the powerplay, and held a 5-1 advantage after 2 periods. Fisher River opened the scoring in the 3rd, to cut the Fishermen lead to 5-2. Selkirk answered back, only to have the Hawks score another of their own. The game closed out with 3 more Fishermen goals, as they won handily 9-3.
Jeremy Pachkowsky again led the Fishermen, scoring twice and adding 3 assists, to record 2 goals & 7 assists over the weekend. Cody Melo & Cale McBride each scored once and added an assist. Tyndall Fontaine & Corbin Pasternak both tallied 2 assists. The Fishermen got single goals from 4 different players. Bretton Fewchuk made 14 saves on 17 shots in the Fish goal.
Nodin Duck scored a goal and recorded an assist for 2 points for the Hawks. Keenan Mason & Gavin Mason both scored single goals. Dakota Johnson made 44 saves in the game on the 53 shots he faced.
The final week of KJHL regular season action gets started on Tuesday this week when the St. Malo Warriors play the North Winnipeg Satelites. The OCN Storm will play in Arborg Tuesday night as well, in a game rescheduled from Sunday. Wednesday night has a rescheduled game from early in January, when the Satelites play in Peguis against the Juniors. Friday night has just one game scheduled, a matchup between the Lundar Falcons and the St. Malo Warriors. Valentine’s Day Saturday has six teams in action, as the North Winnipeg Satelites play in Selkirk against their long-time rivals the Fishermen. Peguis has a weekend road trip to Norway House and Fisher River is also in OCN for the weekend. Sunday games wrap up the regular season, with Peguis in Norway House and Fisher River in OCN. The final start of the day will pit the Arborg Ice Dawgs against the Selkirk Fishermen in Selkirk.
