Week 4 Wrap-Up

The first month of KJHL action began on Wednesday night this week, as the North Winnipeg Satelites headed North to lock up with the Arborg Ice Dawgs.  The Satelites opened the scoring, just shy of two minutes in.  They held on to their 1-0 lead until 3:49 remaining in the first, when the Dawgs struck to tie, then Arborg went ahead a minute later with another.  North Winnipeg tied the game up before the first was over.  The second saw Arborg briefly re-take the lead, however North Winnipeg tied the game back up, and then scored once more late in the period to take a 4-3 lead to the dressing room.  The 3^rd period saw the Satelites extend their lead to 5-3, but then over the course of a 4 minute span, the Ice Dawgs drew to 5-4, and then scored 2 shorthanded goals to take a 6-5 lead.  They added an empty netter in the final minute to ice the game, claiming the 7-5 win.
 
Arborg was led by Cory Kuldys, who scored twice and added 2 assists.  Spencer Kilbrei added a goal and an assist & Byron Gard recorded 2 assists.  Jon Narverud made 37 saves on 42 shots in the Ice Dawgs’ goal.
North Winnipeg was led by Derek Ramage who scored twice and added an assist & Jesse McIntosh, who dished out 3 assists.  Colin Yarchuk tallied 2 assists & Kyle Grand added a goal and an assist of his own.  Marc Hildebrand made 42 saves in the Satelites net.
 
Thursday action pitted the Norway House North Stars in Cross Lake.  The Islanders opened the scoring just under 2 minutes in.  They added another goal just past the midway point, only to have that countered by Norway House.  With the score 2-1 Islanders, Cross Lake turned on the offence.  They added 2 more goals before the first was over, and held a 4-1 lead.  The second period saw more Cross Lake offence, as they scored 3 times in a little over a minute, then added a power play marker, and two more goals just past the 10-minute mark.  Norway House finally responded with a goal of their own, but it was countered not long after with 2 more Cross Lake goals.  After 40 minutes, the game was well in hand for Cross Lake, who was leading 12-2.  The 3^rd period saw the Islanders add 4 more goals, while Norway House found the mark 3 times, making this one a final score of 16-5 for Cross Lake.
 
Cross Lake’s offence was led by Kenley Monias, who scored 4 times and added an assist.  Braeden Boschman also scored 4 times.  Dennis Scatch had 2 goals and an assist, while Arnel Evans added 3 assists & Tie Braun tacked on a goal and 2 assists.  Rosaire McKay, Tanner Osborne-Richard and Tony McLeod all finished with 2 points.  Kris Wood-Ross turned aside 44 of the 49 shots he faced, earning the win.
Norway House got a goal and an assist from Tanner Poker.  Joey Folster had a tough night in goal, playing the first 2 periods, and allowing 12 goals on 37 shots.  Julien Kirkness played the 3^rd, and allowed 4 goals on 17 shots.
 
Friday night saw two games on the schedule.  The first was in Lundar, as the Ice Dawgs hit the road to the play the Falcons.  The first was a tight-checking affair, as only the Ice Dawgs found the mark, and held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.  Arborg came out flying in the second, and scored 4 more times, including two power play goals, and held a 5-0 lead.  Lundar answered with a goal of their own before the period was over, but the Ice Dawgs had a substantial lead at 5-1.  The 3^rd saw the Falcons get the jump, and score two power play goals of their own, and then score one more time to draw within one at 5-4.  It was the Ice Dawgs though, who iced the game, by scoring two goals, just 34 seconds apart in the 3^rd, as they headed off with the 7-4 win.
 
The Ice Dawgs’ were led by Call Finnson with 2 goals and an assist & Spencer Kilbrei who scored once and added 2 assists.  Nico Morrow-Litke scored twice, while Jesse Chupka & Cory Kuldys both recorded 2 assists.  Jon Narverud made 30 saves on 34 shots to earn the win for Arborg.
Lundar’s Landen Gray, Braden Lussier and Bryce Horning all scored once and added an assist.  Cody Paul tallied two assists in the game.  Travis Ridgen turned aside 21 of the 28 shots he faced in the game.
 
Other action on Friday night had the St. Malo Warriors playing host to the Fisher River Hawks.  The game was scoreless until 5:02 remaining in the first when St. Malo took the lead.  They added another goal not long after, and held a 2-0 lead after one.  The Warriors added to their lead in the 2^nd going up 3-0.  Fisher River drew within striking distance however, scoring two power play goals, only 31 seconds apart to leave the score 3-2 St. Malo after 40 minutes.  The 3^rd period saw the Hawks tally two shorthanded goals, 52 seconds apart to take a 4-3 lead.  It was short lived however, as the Warriors tallied 4 more times, including two power play goals to overtake the Hawks and win 7-4.
 
Bryden Johnson scored twice and added an assist to lead the Warriors.  Jeff Froese found the net twice, while Jessi Freund & Jonathan Kostek each scored once and added an assist.  Robert Guimond dished out two assists.  Noah Fournier made 23 saves on 27 shots to earn the win for St. Malo.
Brennan Cochrane led the Fisher River Hawks with two goals and assist.  Jarrett Hogue made 42 saves in the game for the Hawks.
 
Saturday’s schedule had two games on the go.  Norway House continued their road trip, making a stop in Peguis.  The Juniors opened the scoring on the power play, and then added another goal late in the period to hold a 2-0 lead.  They added 3 more goals in the first five minutes of the 2^nd, including a shorthanded marker, and were up 5-0.  Norway House answered back to get on the board, but that was all they could muster in the game.  Peguis added 5 more goals before the 2^nd was over, and held a commanding 10-1 lead.  The 3^rd saw the Juniors pile on, with 4 more goals in the first 9 minutes as they went up 14-1, and closed this game out against a simply understaffed North Stars team.
 
The Juniors got 3 goals and 3 assists from Waylon Neault, and 3 goals and 2 assists from Matthew Cameron.  Devon Garson made 4 goals happen with assists.  Both Keevan Daniels-Webb & Donovan Tanner each scored 2 goals and added an assist.  Jesse Flett, Tristan Slater, Shaquille Houle & Harold Linklater all added 2 points.  Keifer Tacan started the game and earned the win, turning aside 10 of the 11 shots he faced.  Nolan Favel came on, midway through the second, and was perfect, making 20 saves in the game.
Norway House got their lone goal from Elvis Balfour Jr, on an unassisted effort.  The North Stars goalies had a rough night, with Jarred Gore starting the game, giving up 7 goals on 26 shots in just over 31 minutes of action.  Julien Kirkness came in in the second, and made 27 saves on 34 shots in the game.
 
In other action Saturday night, the lone unbeaten teams in the KJHL put their records on the line in OCN, as the Storm played host to the Selkirk Fishermen.  As expected, this was close checking game.  OCN opened the scoring in the first, with the lone goal, on the power play.  The second saw more of the same close checking, as OCN found the mark with less than a minute to go, extending their lead to 2-0.  The Storm took a commanding 3-0 just over 3 minutes into the 3^rdperiod.  Selkirk broke the shutout bid with only 7 seconds left in the game, leaving the Storm as the only undefeated team with a 3-1 win.
 
OCN was led by Devon Tobacco, who scored two goals.  Tyrel Buechert scored the other OCN goal.  Luke Penner was solid in goal for the Storm, turning aside 38 of the 39 shots he faced & nearly earning a shutout, to go along with the victory.
Selkirk’s lone goal was scored by Drayton Mendrun.  Jordan Liske made 28 saves on 31 shots in the game.
 
The 1^st of November brought the close of this week’s action, as Sunday saw 3 games on the schedule.  Norway House completed their road trip with a stop in Fisher River.  The North Stars scored the first goal of the game, near the midway point of the first, on the power play.  Fisher River tallied two of their own, a minute a part & held a 2-1 lead.  The second period saw a tired and under-manned North Stars team fall behind, as the Hawks scored 6 unanswered goals, and held an 8-1 lead.  The Hawks continued to add to their lead in the 3^rd, scoring two more goals, both shorthanded, and just 7 seconds apart.  Norway House got one back, but the Hawks added a final goal in the final minute, cruising to an 11-2 win.
 
Fisher River was led Josh Beaulieu, who scored 3 goals and added 4 assists.  Johnny Beaulieu tallied 3 goals and added 2 assists.  Dominic Laquette scored once and added 2 assists, while Evan Thickfoot dished out 3 helpers.  Keenan Mason, Tyler Kemball, Darryl Thaddeus & Dalton Woodhouse all recorded 2 points.  Ryan Bruyere made 23 saves on 25 shots to earn the win.
Sam McKay Jr & Tanner Poker both scored single goals for the North Stars.  Jarred Gore faced a ridiculous 76 shots, making 65 saves.
 
With both St. Malo and Arborg coming off Friday night wins, this game was looking to be a solid match-up.  Arborg opened the scoring in the first, but their lead was short-lived, as St. Malo poured on the offence, scoring 3 times and taking a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.  The Ice Dawgs cut the lead to 3-2 with a power play marker in the 2^nd, but the Warriors replied 8 seconds later & then added another, to take a 5-2 lead.  The 3^rd period saw the Ice Dawgs again score the first goal of the period, to make the score 5-3, but the Warriors added 2 more goals, and closed out the game with a 7-3 win.
 
St. Malo was led by Bryden Johnson who scored 2 goals and added an assist and Jared Hunter who scored once and added 2 assists.  Riley Hunter tallied two goals, while Jessi Freund added a goal and an assist, and Jared Magne was in on 2 goals with assists.  Jordan Taylor was solid in goal for the Warriors, making 38 saves and earning the win.
Arborg saw Travis Kilbrei & Jesse Chupka both score once and add an assist.  Travis Schalk faced 39 shots in the game, making 32 saves.
 
The final game of the weekend pitted the Selkirk Fishermen against the Peguis Juniors.  Peguis caught the Fish flat-footed, scoring 4 times in the first period, and holding a commanding lead.  Selkirk got on the board in the 2^nd, but the Juniors answered back on the power play.  The Fish added one more and were down 5-2 after 40 minutes.  Peguis scored just 45 seconds in the 3^rd for the lone goal of the period, and to put the Fish on ice, claiming a 6-2 win.
 
Peguis was led by Keevan Daniels-Webb, who scored once and added 3 assists.  Shaquille Houle chipped in with 2 goals and an assist.  Waylon Neault, Theoren Spence & Devon Garson scored a goal and added an assist and Matthew Cameron chipped in with 2 assists.  Keifer Tacan turned aside 30 of the 32 shots he faced to earn the win.
Selkirk got single goals from Connor Spratt and Jeremy Pachkowsky.  Jordan Liske made 27 saves in the Fishermen goal.
 
The first full week of November action gets rolling on Tuesday, as the Fisher River Hawks head to Winnipeg to play the Satelites.  Wednesday night has two games on the schedule, as the Lundar Falcons renew acquaintances with the Arborg Ice Dawgs and the Cross Lake Islanders play rival Norway House.  With no action on Thursday, the weekend has a heavy schedule.  Friday has 6 teams in action, as the Satelites head to Lundar to play the Falcons, Cross Lake hits the road and plays Peguis and OCN heads South for a match with the Warriors.  Saturday sees 8 of the 10 teams in action.  North Winnipeg plays in Selkirk against the Fishermen, Cross Lake plays Arborg, Norway House heads to Lundar and OCN puts their unbeaten streak on the line against Peguis.  Sunday only sees the Norway House North Stars play the St. Malo Warriors.
