Action for the 9
th week of play kicked off
December 1st. All teams are looking to get some wins under their belt this month as the league prepares for its
Christmas break.
Tuesday night had two games scheduled, all featuring South Division rivals. Arborg ventured to Selkirk to hook up with the Fishermen. Neither team found the mark after a hard fought first period. In the second, the Ice Dawgs jumped out to the 1-0 lead near the midway mark. The game remained that way, until Selkirk found the back of the net with just 8 seconds remaining in the period. The final 20 minutes solved nothing and the teams headed for overtime. Not surprising given the way the game had gone, the five additional minutes didn’t break the tie, and the game headed to a shootout. The shootout saw two Ice Dawgs players score, while only one Fishermen could beat the goalie, and the Ice Dawgs claimed the extra point.
Arborg’s goal was scored by Connor Jonasson. Cory Kuldys & Braydon Chwartacki both scored in the shootout. Jon Narverud was excellent in goal, stopping 32 of the 33 shots fired his way, and earning the shootout win.
Selkirk’s lone goal was scored by Jay Muller. Karl Fey scored in the shootout. Riley Bannerman was strong in goal, making 27 saves on 28 shots to earn his team a single point.
A little bit south, the St. Malo Warriors headed to Winnipeg to play the Satelites. The first period ended the same way it started, in a 0-0 tie. Midway through the 2
nd period, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead. North Winnipeg answered back with two goals of their own before the period was over and held a 2-1 advantage. The 3
rd period saw the Satelites tack on 4 goals, two early in the period, and two over the final 4 minutes, including an empty netter as they claimed the win.
North Winnipeg’s Glen Paupanekis led the team with 2 goals and an assist and Sean Murray chipped in with 3 assists. Colin Yarchuk added 2 goals himself. Marc Hildebrand turned aside 36 of the 37 shots he faced to earn the win.
St. Malo’s lone goal was scored by Riley Hunter. Noah Fournier made 32 saves on 37 shots in the game.
Wednesday evening had one game scheduled, as the Fisher River Hawks played host to neighbouring Peguis. The Juniors scored three times over the first period, including a power play marker, and held a 3-0 lead after 20. Fisher River cut the lead to 1 with two goals over the first 10 minutes of the 2
nd, including a power play goal of their own. In the final five minutes of the period however, the Juniors added both a power play goal and shorthanded goal, and had restored their 3 goal lead. The 3
rd period saw the Hawks cut the lead to 5-3 early, however the Juniors added another power play goal and doubled up the Hawks 6-3.
Keeven Daniels-Webb had a big game for the Juniors, scoring 4 goals and adding an assist. Tyler Woodhouse found the net twice, and added 2 assists himself, and Christian Cochrane recorded 3 helpers. Keifer Tacan made 18 saves on 21 shots to earn the victory.
Evan Thickfoot scored twice for the Hawks. Jarrett Hogue stopped 54 shots in the loss.
Friday evening pitted four KJHL teams in action. The Selkirk Fishermen, coming off a shootout loss
Tuesday, took to the ice in Lundar against the Falcons. Selkirk scored the only goal of the first period, a shorthanded tally, and held a 1-0 lead. The second period saw Lundar knot the game at 1 apiece, just past the midway point. However just under 3 minutes later, the Fish re-took the lead, and went to the dressing room up 2-1. The 3rd period remained 2-1 Fish until 1:09 remaining when the Falcons tied the score after pressing for the goal. The game went the full 5 minutes of overtime, solving nothing, and for the second time of the week, the Fish were off to a shootout. In the shootout, the lone goal was scored by the visitors, and Selkirk claimed the extra point.
Jeremy Pachkowsky led the Fishermen with a goal and an assist, along with the lone shootout goal to win it for his club. Coel Forsyth scored the other Fishermen goal. Riley Bannermen stopped 44 of the 46 shots he faced, along with all 3 shooters in the shootout.
Bryce Horning and Landen Gray scored single goals for the Falcons. Travis Rigden turned aside 36 of the 38 shots sent his way, along with 2 of the 3 shooters to earn a single point.
In other action
Friday, a rematch of
Tuesday night’s game was on the docket, but this time in St. Malo. The Warriors scored just 1:30 into the game for the only goal of the first period. Less than 4 minutes into the 2
nd period, the Satelites tied the game up. Over the final 12 minutes, St. Malo added two more goals, including one on the power play, while the Satelites scored once, and the second period ended with the Warriors hold a thin 3-2 lead. The 3
rd period saw St. Malo come out flying, putting in two goals over the first 2:13, and increasing their lead to 5-2. North Winnipeg got one back, but St. Malo added a power play marker in the final 30 seconds to close this one out with a 6-3 win.
Bryden Johnson scored twice and added an assist to pace the Warriors. Mark Nelson dished out 3 helpers. Both Jared Magne & Jessie Freund added a goal and an assist each, and Ben Olson was in on 2 goals. Jordan Taylor allowed 3 goals on 41 shots, making 38 saves and earning the win.
Glen Paupanekis scored a goal and added 2 assists, while Sean Murray added 3 assists in the game. Jesse McIntosh recorded 2 goals for the Satelites. Marc Hildebrand made 29 saves in the loss.
Saturday was the busy night of the week, with 6 teams in action. First up, the Lundar Falcons were hoping to get back in the win column as they visited the Arborg Ice Dawgs. The first period was a battle, with Lundar outshooting Arborg 16-6, but neither team scored. The second period again saw Lundar outshoot Arborg, however Arborg found the mark twice, once 2:31 into the period, and again in the final minute and held a 2-0 lead. Arborg added some insurance just under 3 minutes into the 3
rd period as they scored one more, and held on to win 3-0, as they were badly outshot in this game 51-24.
Cory Kuldys scored twice, including the game winner for the Ice Dawgs. Both Derric Gulay & Cal Finnson added 2 assists. Clint Torfason chipped in with a solo goal. The real story was Jon Narverud, who made a remarkable 51 saves to earn the win & a shutout.
No Falcon could beat Narverud in the game. Randy Quick made 21 saves in the game.
Fisher River headed to Cross Lake and Norway House for a weekend set. Their first stop was Cross Lake on
Saturday night. The Hawks opened the scoring in the game, only to see the Islanders score twice in a 1:23 to take a 2-1 lead to the dressing room. Cross Lake added to their lead in the 2
nd, but just over 3 minutes later, the Hawks narrowed the margin to 3-2. The 3
rd period turned into a goal fest, as the teams combined for 11 goals, with Cross Lake pouring in 8, including 3 shorthanded goals, while Fisher River scored 3 of their own, with 2 coming on the power play. When the dust settled, the final score was Cross Lake 11 & Fisher River 5.
The Islanders were led by Kenley Monias, who scored 4 times and added an assist. Austin Ross tallied a goal & 3 assists. Braeden Boschman scored a hat trick, while Tyrell Armstrong dished out 3 assists. Josh Mallet, Arnel Evans & Tie Braun all finished with 2 points. Kris Wood-Ross made 50 saves on 55 shots to earn the win.
Tyler Kemball scored twice and added 2 assists for Fisher River. Darryl Thaddeus recorded a goal and an assist. Dakota Johnston faced 59 shots in the game, making 48 saves.
Peguis headed to OCN for the weekend, as the Juniors and Storm renewed acquaintances in their battle for first place in the North Division. Peguis opened the scoring in the first, with a power play goal. Just after the midway point however, the Storm tied the game up, and the first ended knotted at 1 each. OCN scored first in the 2
nd, on the power play. Peguis tied the game with 9 minutes to go, but then OCN fired off 4 unanswered goals, including two on the power play to take a 6-2 lead to dressing room. The Storm scored the only goal of the 3
rdperiod making the score 7-2, which they closed out the game with.
Justice Genaille scored 2 goals and added 2 assists for the Storm. Mitchell Tilley scored twice and added an assist & Lodie Ipeelie added a goal and 2 assists of his own. Aavory Wilkie chipped in with a goal and an assist. Luke Penner stopped 33 shots of the 35 he faced in the game to earn the win.
Peguis got lone goals from Devon Garson & Montana Tanner. Keifer Tacan stopped 31 of the 38 shots thrown his way.
Sunday had just two games scheduled. Fisher River continued their northern trek, as they moved on to face the Norway House North Stars. Fisher River jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead. They added 4 more to their total in the 2
nd, including one shorthanded. The 3
rdperiod saw the North Stars break the shutout bid, just 34 seconds in, but later gave up two more goals in the final minute, including one on the power play.
Wyatt McCorrister led the Hawks with 2 goals and 3 assists. Darryl Thaddeus & Gavin Mason both scored twice & added an assist, while Ty Stevens potted one goal and added 2 helpers. Jared Thickfoot chipped in with 3 assists. Tyler Kemball added a goal and an assist. Dakota Johnston made 51 saves on 52 shots for the win.
Norway House’s lone goal was scored by Jeremy Folster. Jarred Gore stopped 46 of the 55 shots he faced.
The final game of the week saw Peguis and OCN matchup for the back to back game. Both teams scored a power play goal each in the first, with Peguis jumping out to the lead, but having it answered by OCN. The 2
nd period saw OCN take a 2 goal advantage, scoring twice, with one of the power play. Before the period was over however, the Juniors cut the lead to 3-2 with a late goal. OCN re-opened a 2 goal lead, again on the power play. Peguis kept pressing however, and drew within one with 8:38 to go & then got the equalizer with just over 4 minutes remaining. The game went to overtime, and with just 1:44 remaining, OCN found the mark to earn the extra point.
Lodie Ipeelie scored once and added 3 assists to pace the Storm. Tyrel Buechert added a goal and an assist & Brody Personius chipped in with 2 helpers. Luke Penner make 38 saves in the game to earn the win.
Harold Linklater, Devon Garson & Theoren Spence all scored once and added an assist for the Juniors. Keifer Tacan earned his team a single point, turning aside 27 of the 32 shots he saw.
With only two weeks to go before the Christmas break, the action is picking up.
Tuesdaynight pits the Selkirk Fishermen in Winnipeg against the North Winnipeg Satelites.
Wednesday sees the Fisher River Hawks on the road against the Arborg Ice Dawgs.
Thursdaysees the Cross Lake Islanders head to Norway House to play the North Stars.
Friday night has only game scheduled, a tilt between the St. Malo Warriors and the Lundar Falcons.
Saturdayevening sees the Fishermen on the road against the Warriors, North Winnipeg heads to OCN to play the Storm and Cross Lake heads south to matchup with the Juniors.
Sunday also has 3 games. Selkirk continues their road stint, stopping in Arborg. Cross Lake heads to Fisher River, and the North Winnipeg Satelites are in Peguis to play the Juniors.
