Week 10 Wrap-Up

This week’s action began as the second to last week prior to the KJHL’s annual Christmas break.  The race for playoff positions in both divisions is tightening up.
 
Tuesday night saw the North Winnipeg Satelites play host to the Selkirk Fishermen.  North Winnipeg opened the scoring late in the first period.  They added a 2nd goal with the only marker of the 2nd & held a 2-0 lead.  Selkirk cut the lead in half just 26 seconds into the 3rd period, and with time running out, scored with just 11 seconds to go in the game to tie it up.  Overtime wasn’t able to solve anything and the game headed to a shootout, where just one Fishermen sniper could score, while all 3 Satelites shooters found the mark.
Kyle Pache and Colin Yarchuk scored for the Satelites.  Glen Paupanekis, Yarchuk & Pache scored in the shootout.  Trent Sargent made 37 saves on 39 shots to earn the win for the Satelites.
Karl Fey & Milan Horanski scored single goals for the Fish.  Horanski scored in the shootout.  Jordan Liske turned aside 37 of the 39 shots he faced, earning his team the single point.  Riley Bannerman played 3:04 in relief in the 2nd period, making 1 save.
 
Wednesday evening had the Fisher River Hawks making a stop in Arborg to play the Ice Dawgs.  Arborg opened the scoring near the midway point of the first, and then added 2 more goals to the their total to hold a 3-0 lead.  They increased the lead to 4-0, but not long after, the Hawks got on the board to make it 4-1.  Arborg tallied 4 more times in the period, including 2 on the power play, while Fisher River got one more.  The Dawgs’ led 8-2 after two periods.  The 3rdperiod saw the teams exchange goals, and the Ice Dawgs cruised to a 9-3 win.
Spencer Kilbrei paced the Ice Dawgs with a hat trick.  Joshua Boone added a goal and 2 assists, while both Connor Jonasson & Travis Kilbrei tacked on 3 assists.  Carter Comeau, Kyle Barkman & Clint Torfason all recorded a goal and an assist.  Cory Kuldys chipped in with 2 helpers.  Travis Schalk turned aside 45 of the 48 shots he faced for the win.
Johnny Bealieu scored twice to lead the Hawks.  Jarrett Hogue made 47 saves in the loss.
 
The Cross Lake Islanders headed to Norway House to play the North Stars on Thursday night.  Cross Lake jumped out to a 4-0 lead, with 2 power play goals, but in the final minute of the first, the North Stars cut the lead in half with a power play goal & even strength goal of their own.  The second period saw the Islanders add 4 more goals to their lead.  Once again, the North Stars found the mark with 2 of their own, and the score was 8-4 after 40 minutes.  The same played out in the 3rd period, with the Islanders scoring 4 times, including a shorthanded goal, while Norway House scored twice and Cross Lake doubled up Norway House with a 12-6 final.
The Islanders were led by Braeden Boschman, who scored 4 goals and added 3 assists.  Tyrell Armstrong chipped in with a goal & 5 assists.  Kirk Robinson scored once and added 3 assists, while Kenley Monias scored two goals and had an assist.  Dennis Scatch, Austin Ross, Tie Braun & Cody Spence all recorded two points.  Kris Wood-Ross made 50 saves on 56 shots to earn the win.
Clinton Apetagon scored two goals and added an assist & Darrian Sinclair dished out 3 helpers to lead the North Stars.  Both Kelton Queskekapow & Hunter York scored 2 goals.  Jarred Gore made 55 saves on 67 shots in the game.
 
The Lundar Falcons played host to the St. Malo Warriors on Friday night’s lone game.  The Warriors got off to a fast start scoring just 1:12 in.  The added a 2nd goal to go up 2-0, but the Falcons narrowed the lead to 2-1 before the first was over.  The second saw the Warriors again score just 1:32 in to take a 3-1 lead.  The Falcons kept coming though, and tied the game, only to see the Warriors score on the power play before the period was over to hold a slim 4-3 advantage.  The 3rd period remained that way for the majority, until Lundar tied the game with just 42 seconds to go.  Looking like it was headed to overtime, the Warriors found the mark with 29 seconds to go to go up 5-4 and then held on for the win.
Dustin Wiebe led the Warriors with 2 goals and an assist.  Brandon Stratton & Jared Magne both scored a goal & added an assist.  Jordan Taylor turned aside 38 of the 42 shots he faced to earn the win.
Lundar was led by Trent Laycock who scored once and added an assist.  Travis Rigden made 33 saves on 38 shots in the loss.
 
Saturday had three games on the schedule.  St. Malo played host to the Selkirk Fishermen, as both teams are neck and neck for the top seed in the South Division.  Selkirk opened the scoring in the first, and then added 2 more goals before the period was over to hold a 3-0 lead.  The second saw the Fish pile on to their total, adding 4 more goals, including a shorthanded goal to be in the driver’s seat with a 7-0 lead.  The 3rd period saw the Warriors get a few back, scoring two goals just 26 seconds apart, only to have the Fish add one more and cruise to an 8-2 victory.
Selkirk was led by newly signed Talon Kelly with a goal and 2 assists and Jeremy Pachkowsky, who recorded a hat trick.  Dylan Painchaud-Niemi added 2 goals, while both Karl Fey & Lucas Lalonde dished out two helpers.  Jordan Liske made 35 saves in the game to earn the win.
St. Malo got two assists from Bryden Johnson.  Jordan Taylor made 25 saves in the Warriors’ goal.
 
North Winnipeg headed to OCN to meet up with the North Division leading Storm.  The Satelites opened the scoring with a power play goal, only to see the Storm also score on the power play to tie the game.  The second period saw both teams open with power play goals.  The Satelites then added 3 unanswered goals to hold a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes.  The 3rdperiod remained 5-2 Sats until just past the midway point, when they capped off the game with a 6th goal, and went on to close the upset win out.
North Winnipeg was led by Sean Murray, who recorded 6 assists.  Glen Paupanekis scored twice, while Brett Stardom added a goal & an assist  Marc Hildebrand made 26 saves in the game for the win.
OCN got single goals from Tyrel Buechert & Aavory Wilkie.  Luke Penner turned aside 38 shots.
 
In the final game of Saturday, the Cross Lake Islanders played the first of their two game road trip against the Peguis Juniors.  Peguis scored first, only to see Cross Lake tie the game shortly thereafter.  The Juniors added 3 more goals before the end of the first, holding a 4-1 lead.  Peguis scored shorthanded, just 42 seconds into the 2nd.  Cross Lake got one back, but then saw the Juniors score two more and go up 7-2.  Cross Lake added two goals over the last 1:31, and the score was 7-4 Peguis after 40 minutes.  The 3rd period saw the teams combine for 7 goals, with Peguis scoring 5 and Cross Lake scoring 2, making this one a final – 12-6 Peguis.
Tyler Woodhouse led the Juniors with 2 goals & 3 assists.  Jesse Flett & Waylon Neault both scored 2 goals & an assist.  Keesin Richard, Keeven Daniels-Webb, Donovan Tanner & Ian Sutherland all recorded 2 points.  Keifer Tacan made 40 saves on 46 to earn the win.
Cross Lake was led by Tyrell Armstrong, who scored twice & added 3 assists.  Braeden Boschman recorded a hat trick & an assist.  Kris Wood-Ross gave up 7 goals on 35 shots & Brendan McLeod gave up 5 goals on 23 shots.
 
Sunday’s schedule had 3 games on it as well.
 
Arborg played host to the Selkirk Fishermen in what turned out to have playoff intensity.  The Ice Dawgs drew first blood with a power play marker & then scored 44 seconds later to take a 2-0 lead.  The Fishermen cut the lead in half with one of their own.  Later in the period, the teams traded goals 33 seconds apart, and the Dawgs held a slim 3-2 lead going to the second.  The second period saw the Fishermen score to tie & then again on the power play to take the lead.  But it was short lived, as the Ice Dawgs scored 8 seconds after the Fish took the lead to tie the game again.  The 3rd period saw the Fishermen again take the lead.  Arborg kept battling though and tied the score, but just as it seemed this game was heading to overtime, the Fishermen scored with just 8 seconds to go to steal the 2 points.
Scott Thomas led the Fishermen with a goal and 2 assists.  Jeremy Pachkowsky scored once and added an assist, while Griffin Steeves added 2 assists.  Riley Bannerman made 35 saves on 40 shots to earn the win.
Arborg’s Ryan Pochailo dished out 3 helpers.  Colton Davies scored twice in the game.  Jon Narverud made 51 saves on 57 shots.
 
Cross Lake capped off their road trip with a stop in Fisher River.  The Hawks took the early lead, scoring twice, only to have Cross Lake cut that lead in half.  The Hawks then poured in 3 more goals before the period was over, giving up one more, and held a 5-2 lead.  The second period saw the Hawks add to their lead and make it 6-2, but Cross Lake scored two power play goals and a shorthanded goal to cut the lead to 6-5 heading to the final frame.  In the 3rd, the teams poured on the offence, with the Hawks scoring once, but the Islanders scoring 6 times, including 2 goals on the power play to come from behind and win 11-7.
Tyrell Armstrong led the Islanders with 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points.  Braeden Boschman poured in 2 goals and 4 assists of his own.  Tie Braun came away with a goal and 2 assists & Tony McLeod, Kirk Robinson, Arnel Evans, Josh Mallet & Jameson Scott all recorded 2 points.  Brendan McLeod & Kris Wood-Ross combined to make 29 of 36 saves in the game, with Wood-Ross recording the win.
Darryl Thaddeus paced the Hawks with a hat trick & an assist.  Evan Thickfoot scored once and added an assist, while Jared Thickfoot, Ty Stevens & Tyler Kemball all recorded 2 assists.  Dakota Johnson made 27 saves on 38 shots in the game.
 
The final game of the week saw the North Winnipeg Satelites stop into Peguis to play the Juniors.  Peguis got the ball rolling with 2 goals in the first period, and held a 2-0 lead.  The Satelites got right back into the game early in the second with a goal of their own & then tied it up later in the period with a power play marker.  The Juniors scored one more before the period was over to re-take the lead.  North Winnipeg tied the game again the 3rd, but Peguis added a power play goal & an empty-netter over the final 6 minutes to claim the win.
Peguis was led by Waylon Neault, who scored twice and added an assist.  Shaquille Houle recorded 2 goals in the game & Montana Tanner got 2 assists.  Keifer Tacan turned aside 36 of the 39 shots he faced.
Glen Paupanekis recorded two assists and Howard Grieves scored once and added an assist to lead the Satelites.  Trent Sargent made 39 saves in the loss.
 
The final week of play before the annual Christmas break gets set to kick off this week.  On Tuesday, the Lundar Falcons play the Selkirk Fishermen & the Arborg Ice Dawgs visit the North Winnipeg Satelites.  Wednesday night pits the Norway House North Stars against the division-leading OCN Storm.  Friday has the Satelites on the road in Lundar.  Saturday night sees the Ice Dawgs in St. Malo, the North Stars in Winnipeg to play the Satelites & the Cross Lake islanders stopping in Fisher River to play the Hawks.  Sunday closes out the first half with the North Stars playing the Hawks in Fisher River & the Islanders playing the Fishermen in Selkirk.
