The second half of the KJHL season opened just after New Year’s day, with the league back in full swing on
Saturday with 6 teams in action.
Lundar headed to Arborg to play the Ice Dawgs. The Falcons opened the scoring in the first, but Arborg tied the game back up not long after with a power play goal. The second period saw the Ice Dawgs grab the lead nearly 5 minutes into the period. Lundar tied the score back up, but Arborg added one more, and took a 3-2 lead to the dressing room. Lundar tied the game just 45 seconds into the 3
rd period with a power play goal. They jumped ahead with another power play goal with just under 4 minutes remaining. But with their goalie on the bench, the Ice Dawgs pressed for the equalizer, scoring with just 43 ticks to go. The game headed to overtime, and just 18 seconds in, Arborg scored to win.
The Ice Dawgs were led by Clint Torfason who scored twice and added an assist. Josh Boone added a goal and an assist, while both Jesse Chupka & Kyle Barkman dished out 2 helpers. Travis Schalk made 35 saves on 39 shots to earn the victory.
Lundar was led by Cody Paul, who scored a hat trick. Both Brenden Carlson and Jason Nikkel recorded 2 assists. Randy Quick made 50 saves in the game to earn a single point for the Falcons.
In other action
Saturday night, the St. Malo Warriors were in Cross Lake for game 1 of their Northern road trip. The Islanders scored the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. St. Malo shook off the travel rust in the 2
nd, and scored twice before the midway point to hold a 2-1 lead. The Islanders scored twice and the Warriors once in a 1:42 span to see the game tied 3-3. With just under 3 minutes to go in the 2
nd period, St. Malo once again took the lead. The third period saw this lead short lived, as Cross Lake tied the game just 11 seconds in, and then jumped out to a 5-4 advantage with just under 13 minutes to go. St. Malo however kept pressing, and scored 4 times over the last 3:48, including a shorthanded goal to take an 8-5 win.
St. Malo’s Robert Guimond scored twice and added an assist & Jessi Freund scored once & tallied an assist to lead the team with 3 points each. Jared Magne & Riley Hunter both scored once and added an assist, while Jonathan Kostek chipped in with 2 helpers. Jordan Taylor stopped 43 shots en route to the win.
Cross Lake was led by Jameson Scott, who scored two goals. Brandon McKay added 2 assists in the game & Braeden Boschman tallied a goal and an assist. Kris Wood-Ross stopped 47 shots in the Islanders’ goal.
The final game of the night pitted the Peguis Juniors in Norway House against the North Stars. Norway House scored first in the game nearly 5 minutes in. Peguis tied the score past the midway point, only to see Norway House re-grab the lead. Peguis then scored 3 more times, holding a 4-2 lead. The teams both traded goals over the final 3 minutes, and Peguis escaped the period up 5-3. The second period saw the Juniors tack on 3 more goals to their total, including a power play tally, while the North Stars got one back, leaving the Juniors’ doubled up on Norway House 8-4. The 3
rd period saw the Juniors pour on the offence, scoring 11 times and cruising to a 19-4 win over the over-matched North Stars.
Peguis was led by Donovan Tanner who scored 3 times and added 4 assists, along with Christian Cochrane who scored twice and added 5 assists. Keeven Daniels-Webb tacked on 4 goals, while Romano Paul scored twice and recorded 4 assists. Waylon Neault and Jared Tobacco each recorded 5 points, while Ian Sutherland chipped in with 4 points. Devon Garson & Harold Linklater both had 2 points in the game. Keifer Tacan stopped 19 of the 23 shots he faced in the win.
Norway House was led by Gregory Paupanekis, who scored once and added 2 assists. Corbin Tait also scored a goal and added an assist. Jarred Gore was under siege most of the game, but stopped 43 of the 62 shots fired his way.
Sunday had just two games on the schedule. One saw the St. Malo Warriors head to Norway House. The Warriors scored three times in the first period, including both a power play goal and a shorthanded goal. In the second, they increased their lead to 5-0, before the North Stars got on the board, a little over 5 minutes into the period. St. Malo tacked on 6 unanswered goals to their total after that, and held a 11-1 lead after 40 minutes. The Warriors closed out their scoring with 3 more in the 3
rd, and won convincingly 14-1.
Jared Magne led the Warriors with 4 goals and 3 assists. Riley Hunter added 2 goals and 3 assists & Dustin Wiebe scored twice and dished out 3 helpers. Brady Allan scored two times and recorded 2 assists. Kyle Fortin and Mark Nelson both recorded 3 points, while Ben Olson, Jessie Freund & Jordy Hill all chipped in with 2 points. Jordan Taylor stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced in the game to earn the win.
Norway House lone goal was scored by Elvis Balfour Jr. Jarred Gore made a remarkable 50 saves on 64 shots in the game.
The final game of the weekend saw divisional-rivals Peguis in Cross Lake. The Juniors scored twice in the first, and held a 2-0 lead. Cross Lake scored 48 seconds into 2
nd period to cut the lead in half & then scored twice in under a minute, including one shorthanded goal grab the lead at 3-2 after 40 minutes. The 3
rd period saw the Islanders double-up the Juniors at 4-2, but then Peguis mounted a comeback, scoring 5 unanswered goals, including one on the power play to take a 7-4 win.
Waylon Neault led the Juniors with 4 goals. Montana Tanner recorded 3 assists and Joey Sutherland chipped in with 2 goals and an assist. Both Keeven Daniels-Webb & Donovan Tanner had two assists. Keifer Tacan stopped 50 of 54 shots in the game to earn the win.
Kenley Monias scored twice and added an assist for the Islanders. Tory Monias played goal, stopped 58 of the 65 shots he faced in the game.
The first full week of the new year begins
Tuesday night, as the Peguis Juniors play in Winnipeg against the Satelites.
Thursday night action pits the OCN Storm in Cross Lake against the Islanders.
Friday evening has the Lundar Falcons playing the St. Malo Warriors.
Saturday night sees three games on the docket, with Cross Lake in Norway House, Arborg in OCN and Fisher River in Peguis.
Sunday’s schedule sees the Juniors play OCN and the Selkirk Fishermen play host to Lundar.
