The 2016-17 KJHL season kicked off on the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Opening night saw two games on the schedule.
Cross Lake 7 - OCN 6
Cody Spence paced the Islanders with 4 assists, while Keith Monias scored twice and added an assist. Treymian Trout scored 2 goals & Tyler Monias added a goal and an assist. Tory Monias stopped 30 of the 36 shots he faced for the win.
Tony Apetagon led OCN with a goal and 2 assists, while Devon Tobacco added 3 assists. Harold Linklater scored twice, with Austin Caza and Brody Personius each adding a goal and an assist. Anthony Fontaine made 30 saves in the loss.
St. Malo 7 - Lundar 4
St. Malo captain Jared Magne dished out 5 assists in the game. Jonathan Kostek scored 2 goals and added 2 assists. Riley Hunter and Dustin Wiebe came away with 3 points each. Noah Fournier turned aside 36 of the 40 shots he saw, earning the victory.
Lundar's Landen Gray scored once and added an assist. Travis Rigden made 27 saves before leaving the game. Rylan Magnusson finished the game in the Falcons' goal, stopping 6 of the 9 shots he saw.
Saturday night saw the Selkirk Fishermen host the Arborg Ice Dawgs.
Selkirk 6 - Arborg 0
Milan Horanski led the Selkirk offence with 2 goals and an assist. Connor Cyr & Drayton Mendrun both added a goal and an assist, while Griffin Steeves chipped in with 2 assists. Riley Bannerman, the KJHL's top goaltender from last season, stopped all 29 shots he faced to earn the shutout and the win.
No Ice Dawg player found the back of the net, however Derek Davies stopped 22 of the 28 shots he faced in Arborg's goal.
Sunday had one game on the schedule to complete to opening weekend. Selkirk played host to division-rival Lundar.
Selkirk 5 - Lundar 1
Selkirk's Mike Smiley scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Fishermen. Gordie Longbottom, Connor Cyr, Kale Ilchena & Brayden Kowalchuk all scored single goals. Travis Schalk allowed 1 goal on 22 shots to earn the victory.
Lundar's lone goal was scored by Landen Gray. Jarret Hogue faced 41 shots in the game, stopping 36 of them.
There were originally games scheduled on both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon involving the Norway House North Stars. They however had some personnel issues and were unable to travel. The games have been postponed for the time being.
Week 2 of the KJHL season begins Tuesday night as the North Winnipeg Satelites play host to the St. Malo Warriors. Thursday night sees the Norway House North Stars travel to play the OCN Storm. Friday night's lone game has St. Malo hosting Arborg. The schedule picks up Saturday with 3 games: Peguis is in Arborg, Selkirk plays host to Fisher River & Cross Lake plays North Winnipeg at Mosienko. Sunday has two games on the schedule, as the Islanders complete their road trip with a stop in Fisher River and the Lundar Falcons host the St. Malo Warriors in their home opener.
