Cross Lake, MB – The Cross Lake Islanders Hockey Club announced today that Brandon Mckay has been named the teams new Head Coach. Born and raised in Cross Lake, the 24 year old returns to the organization as a coach after his competitive playing career ended.
Mckay rejoins the Islanders organization after a successful junior and collegiate career. Most recently, the defenseman played two years with the Marian University in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 3. Prior to that he played parts of three seasons with the Islanders. Mckay says "I’m thankful for this opportunity to coach in a league I once played in, and for a team I once played on, nonetheless. For me, the Islanders organization has built a strong foundation of understanding the game of hockey and the fundamentals that go into building a good hockey team" He continued "My plan is to build, develop, and prepare to get these young men ready to move on to the next level. The staff, the brotherhood, and the fans make it a great franchise to play for and I’m excited to get the ball rolling." Hockey has been part of his life since learning to skate at 2 years old on the outdoor rink in Cross Lake.
The Islanders will kick off their training camp September 9th at the Cross Lake Arena, and interested players are asked to register with Vaughn Blacksmith via email at vaughn_0045@msn.com.
Welcome back to the KJHL Brandon!
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
As the President of the Keystone Junior Hockey League, ahead of the start of a new season, I would like to acknowledge all of the hard work of the KJHL Executive Board, all of the team Governors, General Managers and Coaches on a job well done these past couple of seasons and the importance of keeping Junior Hockey alive and well in the North for our younger generation. The level of competition each team brings makes for exciting hockey, and any team can beat any team on any given night. We are excited for the start of a new season!
