NOVEMBER 9, 2015

Week 5 Wrap-Up

Week 5 Wrap-Up

S.Heather

The first full week of November began on Tuesday night, as the Fisher River Hawks headed to Winnipeg to lock horns with the North Winnipeg Satelites.  The Satelites opened the scoring, with a power play marker.  Less than a minute later, the Hawks tied the score with a goal of their own.  But just 8 seconds after that, the Satelites re-took the lead.  North Winnipeg added one more goal before the end of the period, and held a 3-1 lead.  The second period saw the Satelites score two shorthanded goals in a row, just 1:01 apart and take a commanding 5-1 lead.  The Hawks got one back to cut the lead to 5-2 before the 2nd was done.  The 3rd period opened with two quick goals by the Hawks, scoring 12 seconds apart and just 1:10 in, and suddenly the lead was down to one.  The Satelites answered back to give themselves some breathing room, but Fisher River again cut the lead to one.  That was as close as it would get though, as the Hawks just couldn’t find the tying goal, and the Satelites recorded the win.

Parker Cassie led the Satelites with two goals, while Glen Paupanekis added a goal and an assist & Mason Klawis tacked on 2 helpers.  Derick Vinsky made 34 saves on 39 shots to get the win.
Fisher River was led by Josh Bealieu, who scored two goals.  Johnny Bealieu added 2 assists.  Jarrett Hogue made 42 saves on 48 shots.

There were two games on the schedule Wednesday night, and in the first one, the Lundar Falcons paid a visit to Arborg to renew their rivalry with the Ice Dawgs.  Arborg scored the lone goal of the first period, a power play marker  just passed the midway point.  Lundar answered twice in the 2nd, and held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.  The 3rd period saw Lundar add two more, and go up 4-1.  Arborg found the net on the power play to cut the lead in half, and then added a late goal in the final minute to draw within one, but time simply ran out, and the Falcons took the win by a 4-3 margin.

Cody Paul & Trent Laycock both recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Falcons.  Randy Quick made 40 saves on 43 shots to earn the victory.
Arborg’s Travis Kilbrei also recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Ice Dawgs.  Jon Narverud turned aside 42 of the shots he faced.

In other action Wednesday, the Norway House North Stars played host to the Cross Lake Islanders.  Cross lake opened the scoring, with the only goal of the first period with just over 2 minutes remaining.  The Islanders’ added to their lead in the 2nd, scoring an early power play marker and then an even strength goal a few minutes later, and held a 3-0 lead.  Norway House got on the board with a goal of their own, and then traded goals with Cross Lake.  The Islanders added another goal before the 10-minute mark of the 2nd, and held a 5-2 lead at that time.  Cross Lake poured on more offence, adding 4 more goals before the end of the period, while Norway House countered with two of their own, including a power play goal.  The score was 9-4 Cross Lake after 40 minutes.  With the game well in hand, Cross Lake added two more 3rd period goals, while Norway House scored one more of their own, leading to a final score of 11-5 Cross Lake.

Cross Lake was led by Kenley Monias, who scored 4 times and added an assist.  Braeden Boschman tallied two goals and two assists in the game.  Arnel Evans scored 3 goals, and Jameson Scott added a goal and 2 assists.  Kris Wood-Ross made 28 saves on 33 shots in the win.
Norway House had Harley Muminwatum, Tanner Poker & Darrian Sinclair each score a goal and add an assist in the game.  Jarred Gore faced 35 shots, making 26 saves over 40 minutes.  He gave way to Julien Kirkness at the start of the 3rd, and he made 8 more saves on 10 shots.

With no games scheduled for Thursday, the next action in the league took place Friday night.  With Cross Lake coming off of their win in Norway House, they were looking to continue with a stop in Peguis to play the Juniors.  Peguis opened the scoring in this one, but the Islanders tied the game with a power play marker.  Before the first was over however, Peguis had added 3 more goals to their total, including a shorthanded marker and they held a 4-1 lead.  The second period saw the Juniors add to their lead, scoring two more times (and another shorthanded goal), and held a 6-1 lead heading to the 3rd period.  In the 3rd, it was all Peguis, as they tallied 3 more goals, and cruised to the 9-1 win on home ice.

Matthew Cameron led all scorers with 4 goals for Peguis.  Montana Tanner dished out 3 assists in the game.  Dylan Stevenson & Keevan Daniels-Webb both recorded a goal and an assist, while Christian Cochrane tallied 2 helpers.  Keifer Tacan made 27 saves on 28 shots in the victory.

In other action Friday, the North Winnipeg Satelites headed up Highway 6 to play the Lundar Falcons.  North Winnipeg got on the board first, scoring a power play goal.  The Falcons’ answered back not long after, and the game was tied at 1-1 after one.  Lundar scored early in the 2nd, and then added a power play goal to take a 3-1 lead.  The Satelites responded with a power play goal of their own to cut the lead to 3-2.  Lundar added two more, including their own power play goal and held a 5-2 lead.  The Satelites drew within two though, scoring in the final minute of the period.  Looking to continue with the momentum gained, the Satelites scored twice in the 3rd to tie the game at 5.  But it was Lundar who found the mark, with just under 3 minutes to play, to grab the lead, and hold on for the hard-fought 6-5 win.

The Falcons’ were led by Cody Paul, who scored 2 goals and added 2 assists.  Bryce Horning chipped in with a goal and 2 assists.  Breyden Turner & Trent Laycock each added 2 assists, while Landen Gray scored a goal and added an assist.  Travis Rigden recorded the win, making 29 saves in the effort.
North Winnipeg saw Bryan MacKenzie & Derek Ramage both score 2 goals.  Parker Cassie added 2 assists in the game.  Marc Hildebrand made 32 saves on 38 shots in the North Winnipeg goal.

The final game of Friday saw the OCN Storm put their unbeaten record on the line against the St. Malo Warriors.  St. Malo jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring goals just 18 seconds apart in the fist.  OCN cut the lead in half, with a goal of their own in the 2nd, but the Warriors went back on top by 2, scoring again.  The Storm added a power play goal in the 2nd, leaving the game at 3-2 heading to the final frame.  The 3rd period saw the Storm score a power play goal just 1:12 in to tie the game up.  St. Malo re-took the lead just passed the midway mark of the 3rd, and then scored a shorthanded goal to add to their lead with just under 3 minutes to go.  The Storm continued to press though, and scored with 2:12 to go to cut the lead to 5-4.  That was as close as they could get, and the Warriors recorded the win and handed OCN their first loss of the season.

St. Malo was led by Jared Hunter, who scored two goals.  Jeff Froese & Jared Magne each recorded a goal and an assist.  Dustin Wiebe & Ben Olson chipped in with 2 assists a piece.  Jordan Taylor turned aside 31 of the 35 Storm shots he faced in the game, earning the win.

The last game on the schedule Saturday saw the top two teams in the North Division square off in Peguis.  OCN was looking to get back on the winning side, and Peguis was looking to add to their division-leading record.  The first period saw some back and forth action, but neither team could find the back of the net.  That changed in the second period, as OPN opened the scoring on the powerplay.  The Juniors knotted the score a few minutes later with a power play goal of their own.  They added two more goals in the period, including another power play goal, and held a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.  The 3rd period saw the Juniors score the only goal, a third power play marker, and hold on for the 4-1 vicotry.
