The KJHL began its final week of play before the Christmas break with two games on
Tuesdaynight.
Selkirk played host to the Lundar Falcons. The Fishermen didn’t take long to open the scoring, getting on the board just 20 seconds in. They later added a second goal and held a 1-0 first period lead. The Fish added another to the their total in the 2
nd, and went to the final frame up 3-0. In the 3
rd, Lundar put the Fish on the power play several times, and the Fishermen tacked on 3 power play goals, along with scoring in the dying seconds of the period as they blanked the Falcons 7-0.
Milan Horanski led the Fishermen with 3 goals and an assist. Griffin Steeves tacked on 3 helpers. Corbin Pasternak scored twice, while Michael Smiley & Auzzie Lowen both added 2 assists. Jordan Liske turned aside all 20 of the shots he faced for the shutout win.
No Lundar player found the net, however Randy Quick made 46 saves on 53 shots in the game.
In other action
Tuesday night, the Arborg Ice Dawgs paid a visit to North Winnipeg to play the Satelites. North Winnipeg opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period. They added a second to their total in the second period, and held a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. Arborg cut the lead in half nearly 8 minutes into the 3
rd, and then just under 3 minutes later, tied the score at 2-2. The teams were even over the remaining 3
rd period, and overtime solved nothing, so the game headed to a shootout. Glen Paupanekis scored the only goal between the 6 shooters, and the Satelites earned the extra point.
Jesse McIntosh & Sean Murray scored the Satelites goals, along with Paupanekis adding the shootout winner. Derick Vinsky made 34 saves in the game, and stopped all 3 Arborg shooters to earn the win.
Cory Kuldys scored once and added an assist for the Ice Dawgs. Ryan Pochailo had the other Arborg goal. Jon Narverud made 45 saves on 47 shots, earning his team a single point.
Wednesday evening saw the Norway House North Stars travel to OCN to play the Storm. The North Stars were simply understaffed and overmatched in this game, giving up 4 goals in the fierst period, and another 6 in the second to be down 10-0 after 40 minutes. The Storm tacked on 6 more goals in the 3
rd, with Norway House breaking the shutout bid with a power play goal. The Storm then added 2 more to blow out the North Stars 18-1.
Tyrel Buechert led the Storm with 2 goals and 6 assists. Aavory Wilkie added 4 goals and an assist, while Justice Genaille scored twice and recorded 3 assists. Matthew Gardner scored two goals of his own and recorded 2 assists. Nathan Gardner, Devon Tobacco, Sam McKay Jr, & Mitchell Tilley all recorded 3 points, while Bryson Constant and Drew Morin both recorded 2 points. Luke Penner made 22 saves on 23 shots to earn the win.
Elvis Balfour Jr scored the single goal for the North Stars. Jarred Gore faced 83 shots in the game, making a remarkable 65 saves.
Friday night had one game on the schedule, with the North Winnipeg Satelites playing in Lundar.
The teams played a close checking first period, and neither team could find the mark. North Winnipeg scored the first goal of the game, near the midway point of the 2
nd period. Lundar answered back a little over 2 minutes later with a power play goal. They added a second goal late in the period to hold a 2-1 lead. The 3
rd period saw more close play with Lundar adding a shorthanded goal and an even strength marker and closing the game out 4-1.
The Falcons were led by Landen Gray, who scored 2 goals. Bryce Horning and Storm Swan had single markers. Travis Rigden made 23 saves on 24 shots to earn the win.
Keilan Mott scored the only Satelites goal. Marc Hildebrand turned aside 36 of the 40 shots he faced.
The Norway House games that were originally scheduled for
Saturday and
Sunday were postponed due to a lack of players for Norway House.
That left two games on
Saturday night. Arborg made a stop in St. Malo to play the Warriors.
Arborg scored firsti n the game, but the lead was short lived as the Warriors tied the game before the first was over. The second period saw the Warriors score 4 unasnwered goals and take a 5-1 lead. The Ice Dawgs cut the lead to 3 early in the 3
rd, but this was restored not long after by St. Malo. Arborg scored two more times to get within 2 goals, only to see St. Malo hit the empty net to ice the game and take a 7-4 win.
The Warriors were led by Jared Magne, who scored twice and added an assist. Jordy Hill and Riley Hunter both added a goal and an assist. Brett Keith tacked on two helpers. Noah Fournier made 25 saves in the game for the win.
Arborg’s Clint Torfason paced the Ice Dawgs with 3 goals and an assist. Jon Narverud made 49 saves in the game.
In other action
Saturday night, the Fisher River Hawks played host the Cross Lake Islanders.
The first period saw the teams combine for 10 goals, with Cross Lake scoring 7 times, including a power play goal and Fisher River scoring 3 times, with a power play goal. The second period saw slightly less offense, but the Hawks managed a goal, while the Islanders scored three more times and held a 10-4 lead after two. The 3
rd period saw Fisher River cut the Islander lead in half early on, only to have Cross Lake score two more times to cruise to a 12-5 victory.
Austin Ross & Jameson Scott paced the Islanders offence, both scoring once and adding 4 asists. Kenley Monias potted a hat trick and added an assist, while Braeden Boschman recorded 2 goals and an assist. Tyrell Armstrong added a goal and 2 assists. Garrison Garrioch, Brandon McKay, Kirk Robinson, Derian Duncan, Arnel Evans & Josh Mallett all had two points. Brendan McLeod made 36 saves on 41 shots to earn the win.
Gavin Mason led the Hawks with 2 goals and an assist. Keenan Mason, Darryl Thaddeus & Josh Bealieu all scored once and added an assist. Elliot Wilson made 51 saves in the game on 63 shots.
The final game of the half saw the Corss Lake Islanders roll into Selkirk to play the Fishermen.
Nearly 7 minutes into the game, Cross Lake opened the scoring. Selkirk battled back and tied the score with just 25 seconds left in the period. The second saw the Fish score nearly two minutes in, and then add a power play goal nearly 9 minutes in to take a 3-1 lead. Cross Lake cut the Fishermen lead to 3-2 with a goal of their own, but that was as close as they could get, play the remainder of the 2
nd and the whole 3
rd in a close checking game.
Griffin Steeves led the Fishermen with 2 goals. Corbin Pasternak scored a single goal. Jordan Liske made 25 saves on 27 shots to earn the win.
Tie Braun & Arnel Evans scored single goals for the Islanders. Kris Wood-Ross turned aside 34 of the 37 shots he faced in the game.
The KJHL will now take nearly two weeks off, with action resuming
January 2nd and 3
rd.
